    • A propagating method is provided in which timing and servo sector information is propagated throughout a data storage media that initially contains only a guide pattern. The method uses an offset between the write element and the read element in a read/write head to position and propagate the timing information. In addition, a method for circumferentially aligning timing and servo sector information is disclosed that utilizes a time delay to position the propagated timing and servo sector information. Another method for attenuating timing errors during timing and servo sector propagation to a data storage media is disclosed. Timing errors are attenuated through the use of phase locked loop circuit and measurement of the phase error detected between different tracks on the data storage media. Apparatuses implementing the methods including a storage device readable by a computer system that implements the methods are provided.

    • A hard disc drive employs the self-servo-writing technique that writes practical servo signals on a hard disc based on the temporary servo signals written on the hard disc in advance, includes a holding mechanism that mechanically holds a rotary positioner, a memory which stores an eccentricity signal obtained while the holding mechanism is holding the rotary positioner, and a feedback compensator. The hard disc drive uses the stored eccentricity signal for a reference signal d*, calculates the difference between the reference signal d* and a head position signal xnulld, obtains a positioner drive signal in the feedback compensator from the positional error based on the difference, and positions the magnetic head based on the positioner drive signal.

    • An actuator retract system and method for moving read/write heads from data regions on discs to non-data locations in a disc drive is disclosed. The non-data locations may be on or in close proximity to the discs. The non-data locations may be a landing zone or a load/unload ramp. At disc drive power-down, power generated from the rotational inertia in rotating discs is used to supply a current to a coil of a voice coil motor operably coupled to the actuator. The current generates an electric field around the coil that interacts with a magnetic field in the voice coil motor to move the actuator such that the read/write heads are retracted to the non-data location.

    • An embodiment of the present invention includes a method for driving a voice coil motor in response to signals from a feedback network that senses voice coil motor velocity. The method includes steps of providing a drive signal to an H-bridge for a first interval. At the end of the first interval, the H-bridge is placed in a high impedance state. Following a pause for a second interval during which transient voltages extinguish, a sample and hold circuit is coupled to the voice coil motor. The sample and hold circuit measures a voltage from the voice coil motor that is directly proportional to voice coil motor velocity and thus is directly related to head velocity. After the sample and hold circuit measures the voice coil motor voltage, the input to the sample and hold circuit is disabled. An output signal from the sample and hold circuit is coupled to the feedback network and thus to the H-bridge. As a result, voice coil motor and head velocity is more accurately controlled, reducing probability of collision between heads and discs in a disc drive and thereby increasing reliability of the disc drive.

    • A disc drive having a multi-phase acceleration procedure is disclosed. The multi-phase acceleration procedure accelerates a data storage disc in the disc drive from an initial rotational velocity to a final rotational velocity. As the disc reaches the final rotational velocity, a read/write head operable to access data on the disc is moved by a servo control system from a landing zone to a data region on the disc. An air bearing between a slider of the read/write head and the surface of the disc is created due to the final rotational velocity of the spinning disc. The read/write head may also be moved from the landing zone as the disc reaches an early exit rotational velocity. As such, the multi-phase acceleration procedure continues accelerating the disc until the final rotational velocity to guarantee that the air bearing is maintained between the head and the disc.

    • In order to avoid destruction of recorded data on the magnetic disk due to a shock when portable equipment incorporating a magnetic disk falls from a person's hand or similar, or to minimize damage to the magnetic head and magnetic disk device, in the portable equipment incorporating a magnetic disk device, the magnetic disk device 1 is provided with a magnetic head retraction mechanism and with a held-in-hand detection mechanism which detects whether the equipment is held in a person's hand. When the held-in-hand detection mechanism detects that the equipment is not held in a person's hand, the retraction mechanism causes the magnetic head 5 to be retracted from the recorded data portion of the magnetic disk 3 to the outside, so as to protect the magnetic disk device 1 and the data recorded on the magnetic disk from shocks.

    • A disc drive actuation system for precisely positioning a read/write head over a selected track of a rotatable disc. The actuation system comprises a flexure, a slider, and a read/write head firmly attached to the slider. A first drive unit is used to pivot the flexure to position the read/write head approximately over a selected track. A microactuator is mounted to the flexure and the slider is mounted to the microactuator. The microactuator comprises an inner inactive region, a first outer inactive region, a second outer inactive region, a first piezoelectric section mounted between the first outer inactive region and the inner inactive region, and a second piezoelectric section mounted between the second outer inactive region and the inner inactive region. The inner inactive region is firmly attached to either the flexure or the slider and both of the outer inactive regions are firmly attached to the other of the flexure or the slider. Also, there is an electrical circuit for energizing the first and the second piezoelectric sections to cause them to expand and contract in order to precisely position the read/write head over the selected track. The circuit and the piezoelectric sections are configured such that the first piezoelectric section expands when the second piezoelectric section contracts and the first piezoelectric section contracts when the second piezoelectric section expands. Since the microactuator has to only overcome the inertial mass of the slider and a portion of its own inertial mass, very precise control at high frequency is possible.

    • A disk drive is disclosed which provides a function of restoring a flying head to its normal flying state in the event that the head comes into contact with the surface of a rotating disk due to disturbance and if recovery from the contact state is allowed. When contact or collision of the head with the disk is detected by a collision monitor, a CPU determines whether or not recovery from the contact state is possible on the basis of the condition of disturbance detected by a sensor. The CPU, on determining that recovery from the contact state is possible, carries out a contact avoidance operation to restore the head to its normal flying state.
