    • A hydraulic brake actuator for a wedge type brake includes a tubular structure extending from the brake and housing an extended end of a stem of the wedge of the brake therein. A primary cylinder is mounted on the tubular structure and includes a primary piston mounted for sealed movement therein. The piston has a rod extending from one side thereof into the tubular structure to be operably connected to the extended end of the stem. A spring acts on a second side of the piston and is capable of moving the piston toward a first position within the cylinder for actuation of the brake. Hydraulic fluid can be selectively introduced to the primary cylinder at the first side of the piston to cause movement thereof in opposition to the spring to a second position to prevent actuation of the brake by the spring. An annular space between an interior surface of the tubular structure and an exterior surface of the rod is sealed to prevent the hydraulic fluid from escaping from the cylinder. The sealing includes a floating seal carrier surrounding the rod and supporting a seal which extends inwardly to make sealing contact with the exterior of the rod and a mechanical face seal at the end of the floating seal carrier to prevent the escape of hydraulic fluid behind the floating seal carrier.

    • 1483597 Steam engines; IC reciprocating engines H E MUNGEAM 2 Jan 1975 [4 Oct 1973] 46475/73 Headings F1B and F1M A reciprocating steam engine, Fig. 1, or I.C. engine, Fig. 2, (see below), comprises a housing 1 in which are provided two pistons 2, 3 respectively fast with sleeves 2a, 3a each defining a cyclinder for the other piston, the pistons and cylinders reciprocating in opposite directions and being restrained also to oscillate angularly about the axis of the housing 1 by an inclined transverse rod 6 connected at its ends 6a, 6c to crank arms 6b, 6d on the driveshaft and passing through bearing blocks 3b, 2e in the sleeves 3a, 2a respectively. The reciprocation and oscillation of the sleeves acts to cover and uncover steam inlet and outlet valves 9, 9a on opposite sides of the housing 1. A fixed piston 13 in the oil sump 15 co-operates with the inside of piston 2 to force feed oil through lines 11 and to suck it back through lines 10. Again, Fig. 2, an I.C. engine comprises a housing 21 having two pistons 23, 31 respectively fast with sleeves 22, 31, reciprocation and oscillation of the pistons and cylinders controlling the inlet and exhaust ports. The sleeve 22 is in the form of a hollow piston co-operating with the casing to define an air chamber 21a feeding air to the first cylinder defined by sleeve 22. A similary air chamber 30 is defined by a fixed piston 24a co-operating with a hollow piston 23.
