    • The filter cartridge for the water tank of a coffee machine comprises a housing having on both sides a plurality of slot-shaped openings constituting two inlets. For softening the water, the housing of the filter cartridge contains a ion exchange resin. The bottom of the housing comprises a central outlet. The interior of the housing is provided with a plurality of baffle members increasing the length of the flow path of the water between inlets and outlet. The housing comprises an upper portion and a lower portion, sealingly fixed to each other. The baffle members extend essentially in vertical direction and are alternately fixed to the upper and to the lower housing portion. Water passages are provided between the upper housing portion and the baffle members fixed to the lower housing portion, as well as between the lower housing portion and the baffle members fixed to the upper housing portion. The filter cartridge of the invention requires not much space, but offers high efficiency resulting from the long flowing path of the water through the ion exchange resin between inlets and outlet.

    • A water purification through-flow device which comprises a cylindrical shell which is divided lengthwise into two or more sectors, separated from each other by partitions, with a cover fitting one end of the shell, in which cover there is provided an inlet for water which is to be purified. Depending on the number of sectors, the outlet is provided in the same cover if there are two sectors, and in the other cover if there are three sectors: the water flowing through each of the sectors one after the other. The individual sectors may contain the same purification substance, or different sectors can contain different ones. There may be provided mechanical filtration means for the water passing through the device, and there may be provided means for closing the various sectors during storage.

    • A water purification device wherein a separation tank is placed in a space of a filter tank above a mass of granular filter material, the separation tank having an inlet through which washing water which has been supplied into the filter tank for washing the filter material and the entrained granular filter material is supplied into the separation tank during washing of the filter material. The water and entrained filter material are caused to descend in a vortex flow and the granular filter material is separated and collects at an outlet at the bottom of the separation tank which is closed by a cover member. A rod- or cylinder-like member is mounted generally along the central vertical axis of the separation tank. The vortex flow of the washing water is reversed and caused to flow in a gyratory flow along the outer peripheral surface of the rod-like member and to be discharged from the filter tank through a water outlet. The granular filter material entrained in the contaminated washing water is separated by centrifugal force in the vortex flow and the reversed gyratory flow and collected at the bottom of the separation tank bottom and eventually returned to the filter tank. The loss of the filter material is thus prevented during washing of the filter material.
