    • A multiple pivoted lathe chuck jaw assembly utilizes a plurality of baseplates each having one or more sub-jaws pivotably attached thereto. Each baseplate is configured for attachment to, or is part of, the radially movable elements of a lathe chuck. Further, each baseplate has two pivotably attached sub-jaws. Each sub-jaw has two compression and two expansion workpiece gripping surfaces extending generally outwards from the front face of the baseplate: a first tier compression gripping surface, a second tier compression gripping surface, a first tier expansion gripping surface, and a second tier expansion gripping surface. The gripping surfaces each approximate a curved shape that matches the shape of a circle of a given radius allowing the sub-jaws to pivot and self-align to the workpiece surface for maximum surface contact and gripping force. Force-directed serrations can provide additional holding force toward the face of the chuck.

    • A method and apparatus are provided, for clamping a fiber placement tool to a fiber placement machine, along a rotational axis of the fiber placement machine, through use of a clamping apparatus having a plurality of drive lugs extending axially from the machine, and having three intersecting faying surfaces thereof which mate simultaneously in substantially intimate contact with three corresponding intersecting faying surfaces of a plurality of drive lug receptacles extending axially from the tool. Pairs of movable tines, disposed on opposite sides of each drive lug, pull the drive lugs into intimate contact with the drive lug receptacles. Master fixtures are used for setting the drive lugs and lug receptacles with respect to corresponding ones of the other, to achieve a desired intimate fit between faying surfaces thereof.

    • A machine tool arbor for holding a rotating machine part or workpiece is fitted with an actuator member at a back or distal end of an arbor main body for tool-less chucking and unchucking of a machine part or workpiece at a front or proximate end of the arbor main body. An actuator ring or knob is mounted at the back end of the arbor main body which, when rotated in one direction, causes an pusher member (collet pusher part, hydraulic piston) to move in such a manner as to displace a chuck member (inclined collet, flex collet, expansion ring) and release the machine part or workpiece that is chucked. When rotated in the opposite direction, the actuator knob causes the actuator member to move in an opposite manner as to fix the chuck member in a position to firmly hold the machine part or workpiece to be chucked. With this fitting, the machine part or workpiece can be chucked and unchucked by convenient operation of the actuator knob at the back end of the arbor without the need for using a special chucking tool.
