    • A temperature and pressure sensitive valve is disclosed herein. The valve has a valve piston for regulating flow through the valve, a valve piston guide for directing movement of the piston, the piston guide having one or more passages there through, a thermal element for enabling movement of said piston, and an elongated housing having an anterior and posterior end and an interior wall able to house the piston, guide and thermal element. The housing further has two or more passages able to aid the piston in regulating flow, with at least one of the passages placed towards the anterior end of the housing, and at least one of the passages placed towards the posterior end of the housing.

    • This invention relates to a frost protection device for preventing sections of water pipes which are in danger of being affected by frost from freezing up. Said frost protection device consists essentially of a pressure control valve with a piston-type valve body which moves axially in a cylindrical housing. The pressure control valve also interacts with a valve seat which is connected to the section of pipe being monitored. According to the invention, the valve seat is located outside of the flow path defined by the section of pipe, in a branch which constantly communicates with said section of pipe.

    • An apparatus for preventing freezing of interior water pipes. A thermal switch is attached to a hot and/or cold water supply pipe in a remote location that is prone to freezing in cold weather. The thermal switch electrically communicates with a power source and with a solenoid-actuated valve. The solenoid-actuated valve is located in a conduit communicating the outlet of the water pipe adjacent a water usage station with the water outlet of a fixture located at the water usage station. This conduit is separate from the existing supply line communicating the outlet of the water pipe with the fixture and does not, therefore, interfere with the normal operation of the fixture.

    • Apparatus for automatically opening an orifice to allow flow when ambient temperature drops below a predetermined level, such as the freezing point of water. The apparatus is for connection to a liquid line that carries liquid at a selected pressure for producing a selected low flow rate of liquid from the liquid line when the ambient temperature drops below a selected temperature. The apparatus comprises an orifice in the end of the liquid line of selected small diameter, a closed chamber means having an expansible portion filled with a selected condensible gas, for which the vapor pressure varies with temperature in a known manner. The apparatus further comprises a valve assembly selectively positioned adjacent the orifice and at a specific distance from the expansible portion of the closed chamber. The closure means is selectively positioned by means of spacers positioned adjacent the valve assembly. A means connecting the expansible portion of the chamber to a closure means in the valve assembly is provided to shut off the flow of liquid by sealing an orifice when the temperature is above a selected value, and to open the orifice to allow a small trickle flow of liquid whenever the ambient temperature is less than a selected value, such as the freezing point of water.

    • A drain valve assembly for automatically draining water from a cooling system of an inboard marine engine when the ambient temperature drops to a preselected value. The drain valve includes a cup-shaped base having a group of inlets connected to portions of a cooling system of the engine to be drained, and the open end of the base is enclosed by a cover. Each inlet defines a valve seat and a sealing piston is mounted for movement in the base and includes a series of valve members that are adapted to engage the valve seats. An outlet is provided in the sidewall of the cup-shaped base. The valve members on the sealing piston are biased to a closed position by a coil spring and a temperature responsive element interconnects the sealing piston with the cover. The temperature responsive element is characterized by the ability to exert a force in excess of the spring force of the coil spring when the ambient temperature is above about 50.degree. F., to thereby maintain the valve members in the closed position. When the temperature falls below the selected temperature, the temperature responsive element will retract, thereby permitting the valve members to be opened under the influence of the spring to automatically drain water from the cooling system of the engine.

    • A self-actuating drip valve for attachment to a standard outdoor faucet for the prevention of freezing of such exposed faucets and water pipes leading to the faucet. A tube includes a collar at one end for securing to the end of the faucet. A stem extends within the tube so as to be adjacent the faucet. One or more ports extend between the faucet and the interior of the tube. The distal end of the stem mates with an orifice through the distal end of the tube. The tube and stem have different coefficients of expansion, one being plastic and the other being metal. In practice, the tube is attached to the faucet, which is open, and is filled with water. When the outside ambient temperature drops, the tube and stem contract at different rates and the relative movement opens the orifice in the distal end of the tube so as to permit water to drip therethrough.

    • An automatically operated valve to prevent freezing of water lines. The valve is elongated, having threads on one end to be received in a conventional plumbing tee or the like, or in a threaded opening in a faucet. The opposite end discharges water during dripping, and has a nipple to receive a hose to divert the waste water. A temperature sensitive device is in contact with the water, and includes a tip that projects at high temperatures and retracts at near-freezing temperatures. A plunger in the elongate valve is moved to close a valve when the tip is projected, and a spring within the drip valve urges the plunger to open the valve when the tip is retractable. The temperature sensitive device is carried by the drip valve by mating threads so the position of the temperature sensitive device can be varied through the threaded engagement.
