    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To disclose systems and techniques for acquiring a gated pilot signal.
      SOLUTION: A gated pilot signal can be acquired, by searching for a first gated pilot signal, deriving timing information from the search for the first gated pilot signal, and searching for a second gated pilot signal using the timing information. This is executed in a variety of fashions, including a receiver with a searcher configured to generate a bit sequence, a correlator configured for correlating a received signal with the bit sequence, and a processor configured to detect a first gated pilot signal as a function of the correlation, derive timing information from the first gated pilot signal and detect a second gated pilot signal, by using the timing information to control the bit sequence generated by the searcher.

    • An architecture and method for flexible preamble processing is disclosed herein. A preamble processing engine (220) detects a code sequence in input, where the code sequence is a sum of a first code sequence (240) and a second code sequence (244). The preamble processing engine includes a data input line, a code input line, a despreader, and a plurality of memory registers (300a-300m). The code input selectively receives the first code sequence or the second code sequence, the first code sequence having a period longer than a period for the second code sequence. The despreader is coupled to the data input line and the code input line. The despreader producing a despread result between the first code sequence and the input data. Lastly, the plurality of memory registers, which are coupled to the despreader, each stores only a portion of the despread results.

    • A spread spectrum signal demodulating method whereby spread-code synchronous acquisition and carrier synchronous acquisition are performed using FFT at high speed, wherein a received signal, of which the carrier wave is modulated with a signal obtained by spectrum-spreading data with a spread code, is subjected to the FFT and the result of the FFT is stored in a first memory. The FFT result of the received signal stored in the first memory and the result of FFT of the spread code stored in a second memory are read out and multiplied to detect the correlation between the received signal and the spread code. A readout address of either the FFT result of the received signal or the FFT result of the spread code is shifted by an amount corresponding to a carrier frequency of the received signal.

    • Demodulator architectures for processing a received signal in a wireless communications system. The demodulator includes a number of correlators coupled to a combiner. Each correlator typically receives and despreads input samples (which are generated from the received signal) with a respective despreading sequence to provide despread samples. Each correlator then decovers the despread samples to provide decovered “half-symbols” and further demodulates the decovered half-symbols with pilot estimates to generate correlated symbols. The decovering is performed with a Walsh symbol having a length (T) that is half the length (2T) of a Walsh symbol used to cover the data symbols in the transmitted signal. The combiner selectively combines correlated symbols from the assigned correlators to provide demodulated symbols. One or more correlators can be assigned to process one or more instances of each transmitted signal. The pilot estimates used within each assigned correlator to demodulate the decovered half-symbols are generated based on the signal instance being processed by that correlator.

    • A fast initial acquisition and search device for a spread spectrum communication system is disclosed herein. The search device includes a memory for storing the first code sequence, and a plurality of computation circuits coupled in parallel to the memory. The search device also includes a plurality of threshold detector circuits. Each of the plurality of threshold detector circuits is respectively coupled to one of the plurality of computation circuits. Each of the plurality of computation circuits implements a unique phase offset for a second code sequence with respect to the first code sequence. A correlation operation is performed in parallel at each of the plurality of computation circuits followed by a threshold evaluation that indicates whether the correlation result satisfied a threshold value.
