    • This optoelectronic, finger-operated keyboard for use in industrial measurement equipment is designed to achieve an optimum signal-to-noise ratio and minimize the drop in the intensity of the infrared emitters during the service life of the measurement equipment. The keys for generating respective associated operation signals (n1, n2, n3) have an infrared-transmitting cover (1), one infrared emitter (3) per key disposed at the inside (12) of the cover and emitting light collimated virtually perpendicular thereto, one infrared detector (4) adjacent to each infrared emitter which is separated from the latter by a shield (5) opaque to infrared and is pointed at the cover, said infrared detector being located within the main radiation range of the infrared light emitted by the infrared emitter and scattered at a finger (2) but outside the infrared light reflected from the outside and/or inside of the cover. An operating circuit (8) comprises a separate control and detection circuit (15, 25, 35) for each key which generates current-control pulses (si1, si2, si3) with a mark/space ratio less than 1:1 for feeding the infrared emitter (13, 23, 33), and a scanning circuit (18) common to all keys which switches a current switch (19) connecting all control and detection circuits (15, 25, 35) to one terminal (SN) of a supply-voltage source into a conducting state.

    • An optical keyboard includes a plurality of photosensors arranged in an X-Y coordinate system where a plurality of rows represent a plurality of X-axes and a plurality of columns represent a plurality of Y-axes. Each sensor represents input to data processing means. When a beam of light is cast onto a photosensor, the photosensor is actuated to transmit a coded signal to a microprocessor board. The microprocessor board scans the array of photosensors row by row sequentially to identify the column position of an actuated photosensor. The input received from the scanning operation is converted to data and transmitted through either a serial or parallel interface to a computer. Interface circuitry converts the data to a form readable by the computer. Thus, by selectively moving a light source to desired photosensors, specific information can be transmitted to a computer for printout or for operation of other devices remotely controlled by the computer to permit the computer to be operated by individuals unable to perform manual keyboard operations.

    • A data entry system includes a keyboard which includes a panel of chemically toughened, laminated glass. The upper surface of the panel has a plurality of key areas respectively representative of different keys, and a plurality of LEDs are respectively positioned opposite the key areas adjacent the lower surface of the panel. Each LED has a photodiode associated therewith, each photodiode being arranged to receive infra-red light emitted by the associated LED, transmitted through the glass panel and reflected back from an operator's finger placed on the respective key area to operate that key. Output signals are produced in response to infra-red light reflected back to the photodiodes, and, in response to these signals, a microprocessor produces an output indicative of an operated key. The data entry system is suitable for use in a through-the-wall automated teller machine.

    • The invention provides a method for operation of a touch input device (2) comprising a touch input area. Such operational states include a sleep mode or active mode, the use of a full QWERTY or reduced keyboard, translation or rotation of graphical elements, etc. The method is particularly suitable for differentiating between a touch by a stylus (32) or touch by a finger (37).
