摘要： An RF transmitter (20), such as a radar transmitter or a communications amplifier, is provided that includes a plurality of RF power tube sections (34, 36) each sharing a common collector (38). The RF tube sections (34, 36) may comprise Klystron tubes, TWT tubes or other RF power tubes known in the art. A common modulator is also typically provided to modulate electron beams (48) produced in each of the plurality of tube sections (34, 36). The RF transmitter (20) according to the present invention is considerably lighter and smaller relative to known multi-band RF transmitter structures that employ separate collectors and modulators. An associated RF amplification method that employs a common collector is also provided.

The terahertz source is a versatile terahertz device that can be configured to transmit a plurality of wavelengths, thereby facilitating the detection of multiple contaminants using a single source device. In one embodiment, the Smith-Purcell radiation effect is exploited by passing an electron beam over a modulated conducting surface, wherein the spacing of the periods of the modulated surface is varied. The variations in the modulated surface enable the source to produce light of varying wavelengths.

Power is coupled to the common cavity from the resonant cavities (23, 24) of the beam tubes, and is then fed to an output line (29). Previously, the signals from the output lines of respective beam tubes were combined. The output line may be transmission line or waveguide. The means (26, 27, 28) for coupling signals between the cavities may comprise loops or irises, both of which may be selectively adjustable.
