    • An apparatus and method for highlighting holidays in a calendar software application of a portable intelligent communications device or in a separate computer, including the steps of specifying a geographical location, determining holidays for the geographical location, depicting a calendar on a display screen of such portable intelligent communications device or computer, and depicting holidays in a fashion different from other days on the calendar. The geographical location information is specified by the current location of the portable intelligent communications device or via a graphical user interface. The holiday information is obtained from a database housed in the portable intelligent communications device or via an Internet address connected through communications circuitry of the portable intelligent communications device. The holidays for the geographical location may be depicted in a color different from the other dates on the calendar and each holiday name may be depicted on the appropriate date of the calendar.

    • Traditionally, it has been difficult to share data among diverse computer applications and platforms because of underlying differences in data formats. Although the meaning or purpose of the data may be similar or identical (for example, two appointments entered using separate computer applications), the differences in data formats required by the various computer applications and platforms renders such sharing difficult. A method is disclosed for the translation of dissimilarly-formatted data between disparate computer applications and platforms. The method also provides for the dynamic reconciliation of conflicts in the data (for example, two appointments scheduled at the same time) based on both the content of the data and on specific preferences indicated by the user of the translation facility. First, the data is translated to a common format based on the user-specified mapping of data fields (identifying handheld and desktop fields to be translated) and considering the characteristics of the handheld or desktop computer application. Then, if the specific data item (such as an appointment, telephone book entry, or memo entry) already exists on the desktop computer application or platform, the user is optionally notified of the conflict and given the opportunity to replace the existing data, ignore the incoming data, or modify the incoming data. The criteria for determining the existence of conflicts is disclosed for updating schedule information and keyed databases.

    • An electronic rescheduler for promptly and efficiently rescheduling appointments in a two part procedure. In the first step, there is an initial selection of one or more different time periods or "options" during which a new, replacement appointment would be desired; and, in response, the electronic rescheduler reports a listing of free time slots that are available within the selected "options". In the second, and final step, on of the reported free time slots is chosen for the new appointment, and is entered into the rescheduler to complete the rescheduling operation. A number of such "options" are made available, including "morning" or "afternoon" appointments, the "earliest" available time, and others. For office use, the electronic rescheduler can be configured as a desk top unit positioned alongside a telephone, and coupled to the phone. It may include a display screen, printer, and audible announcer, for voice response over the phone; as well as a keyboard for the various entries and selections. Appointments can be rescheduled promptly in either a semi-automatic or fully automatic manner, by direct interaction with the rescheduler by a person, or by remotely controlled operation over the telephone. A more simplified interactive telephone operation is also provided, to permit a caller to operate the electronic rescheduler over the telephone in an automatic manner.

    • A time-keeping device for issuing reminders at predetermined times and including a computer with a memory for receiving and storing information and a processor for processing the stored information. A clock provides timing signals to the processor and an audio system records and reproduces messages on distinguishable tracks of a recorder. Information identifying a plurality of specific future times each associated with one of the tracks is introduced into the computer memory by a programmer and a selector selects and prepares any of the tracks for operative coupling to the audio system. In response to the occurrence of a specific time preset into its memory, the computer energizes a signalling device to alert an individual that activation of the audio system will produce a message reminder previously recorded on a track associated with the occurred time and automatically selected by signals from the processor.
