    • There is provided an apparatus and method for measuring and monitoring the torque exerted by a cyclist during pedaling of a human-powered vehicle, as for example a bicycle, including an electromagnetic emitter which is adapted to be fixed securely to a rear wheel hub, for generating and directing a beam of electromagnetic radiation towards a rim of the wheel, and a detector mounted on the wheel for detecting the movement of the beam when torque is applied to the wheel, the movement being indicative of an angular displacement of the hub with respect to the rim and directly proportional to the torque. Either alone or using optical elements, the beam is directed to travel at least a distance between the emitter and the rim before detection. The measurement can be used to provide a power output.

    • Dynamometer apparatus for measuring the performance of a wheeled vehicle comprising: a support assembly on which the vehicle may be supported; power absorption apparatus mounted on the support assembly for engagement with at least one wheel of the vehicle; a pump connected to the power absorption apparatus for producing a fluid pressure in response to the torque produced by the vehicle wheel; speed measuring apparatus mounted on the support for engagement with the vehicle wheel to indicate the surface speed thereof; and indicator apparatus connected to the pump and the speed measuring apparatus for correlating fluid pressure and surface speed with the performance of the vehicle.

    • A system is provided for measuring the horsepower applied to the wheels of an automobile when the automobile is disposed on the rolls of a dynamometer. The system includes a bridge circuit formed by a plurality of strain gages. The strain gages are responsive to a torque imparted to the wheels of the automobile to produce an unbalance in the bridge in accordance with such torque. The system also includes means for producing a voltage related to the speed of rotation of the automobile wheels. This voltage is introduced to a first pair of opposite terminals in the bridge. A voltage representing the horsepower is then obtained from a second pair of output terminals in the bridge. One of the terminals in the second pair may be connected to a reference potential to eliminate the effects of any voltage common to the terminals in the first pair. Means may also be included in the bridge arrangement for controlling the speed of the vehicle and for compensating in the bridge for any unbalance produced by such control means.

    • The invention provides a dynamometer for measuring velocity, acceleration, torque and other quantities relative to the performance of a road vehicle or machine and comprises a plurality of roller assemblies on which the road wheels of the vehicle rest and which themselves form an inertia load or are connected to a flywheel forming an inertia load, each roller assembly driving a pulse generator producing a train of primary pulses which are gated with longer master control pulses to provide successive groups of primary pulses of the order of 0.1 seconds duration. Successive groups are operated upon by arithmetical circuits of an electrical computer to derive output signals representing velocity, acceleration or such other quantity as may be required to be determined, this or these quantities being stored in storage circuits which are constantly updated but can be held or frozen at a particular value by a trigger signal generated in response to attainment of a predetermined value of one of said quantities such as maximum value. The quantities are displayed digitally or graphically on a cartesian plotter unit.
