    • The present invention relates to a device for determining the wheel geometry and/or the axle geometry of motor vehicles in an inspection room, using an optical measuring apparatus having at least one image-taking device which records a marking device including at least one body feature and one reference feature system, and having an evaluating device, the position of the reference features in the inspection room being known in the evaluating device, and the recording of the marking device taking place during travel of the motor vehicle. The image-taking device is connected to a wheel to be measured, at its wheel rim in pivot joint fashion, and follows the rotating motion of the wheel, the optical axis of the image-taking device always being aligned essentially perpendicular to the roadway plane and the axis of rotation of the pivot joint being aligned in all wheel positions essentially parallel to the roadway plane. The reference feature system is situated in the roadway plane in the field of view of the image-taking device, and the at least one body feature is always situated in the field of view of the image-taking device and follows the movement of the motor vehicle. The position of the axis of rotation and/or the plane of rotation of the wheel is able to be determined in the light of the position of a wheel feature that is to be ascertained.

    • A device for determining the wheel and/or axle geometry of motor vehicles in an inspection room using an optical measuring device having at least two image pick-up devices, which, from at least two different perspectives, record images from a marking device (or optical target), inclusive of at least one wheel feature arranged on each wheel, and including an evaluation device. The marking device further includes an automobile body feature and a reference feature arrangement, including at least three reference features for use in obtaining geometrical wheel and axle data. The inspection room is defined between the reference feature arrangement and the driving surface plane. The position of the reference features in the inspection room is known or stored in the evaluation device. The marking device is detected while the motor vehicle is being driven past. The at least one wheel feature is detected to define a wheel plane in at least three different rotational positions of the wheel, and the at least one automobile body feature is detected at the same time to define the vehicle's motion coordinates. The evaluation device defines at least the wheel and/or axle geometry from the relative position of the wheel plane to the vehicle's motion coordinates.

    • A system for measuring vehicle alignment angles has a plurality of sensor elements for mounting to wheels of a vehicle to be aligned. The system uses the sensor elements to measure various angles such as steer ahead angle and toe, and the system also has a display for displaying information to a user and a memory for storing operating instructions for the system. Operating instructions are stored in the memory for determining from compensation measurements taken at a minimum of first and second longitudinally displaced positions whether the toe parameter of two wheels falls outside a predetermined toe range, and whether the steer ahead angle of the vehicle falls within a predetermined range. The operating instructions stored in the memory further include instructions responsive to the toe parameter falling outside the toe range to control the system to display to the user information indicative of the need to adjust the toe parameter before taking additional compensation measurements. The operating instructions stored in the memory further include instructions responsive to the toe parameter not falling outside the toe range and to the steer ahead angle falling outside the predetermined range to control the system to display to the user information indicative of the need to adjust steer ahead angle before taking additional compensation measurements.
