    • A firearm, such as a handgun, rifle, machine gun, etc. has a frame assembly having a barrel defining a cartridge chamber and includes a magazine for serially positioning cartridges at a pickup location relative to said frame assembly and barrel. A reciprocating member, such as a slide or bolt is provided in the firearm assembly for moving cartridges from said pickup location into the cartridge chamber of the barrel and for extracting the cartridge cases of spent cartridges from the cartridge chamber and ejecting them from said firearm. The reciprocating member is machined to define a breech face recess. A cartridge specific breech face element is removably secured within the breech face recess to adapt the firearm to fit a cartridge of desired caliber and configuration. The breech face element can be provided in specifically desired dimensions to compensate for wide tolerances or wear of the reciprocating member.

    • In an automatic firing weapon containing a forwardly and rearwardly travelling breechblock each cartridge is engaged by a breechblock edge of the forwardly travelling breechblock and pushed into the weapon or gun barrel. As soon as the breechblock is in its rearmost position a cartridge is moved through a cartridge feedway or infeed channel into a position from which the same can be pushed into the weapon barrel by means of the breechblock. Since the breechblock assumes its rearmost position only for a brief time period when the firing weapon has a high firing rate or cadence, large forces are required for accelerating the cartridge which is to be infed. Hence, the springs which have been heretofore used are replaced by an insertion lever and a back-up latch or pawl, the insertion or placement movement of the insertion lever being controlled by a control cam of the rearwardly travelling breechblock.

    • An automatic weapon firing mechanism consisting of a slideably movable boltarrier with cam slots cooperating with pins on the bolt and firing pin for rotating the bolt to lock it in battery position for firing and to cock the firing pin during recoil. Continued forward movement of the carrier after the bolt is locked causes the firing pin to sear off and strike the chambered cartridge. The firing pin has its own firing spring so that a constant reliable striking force is applied to the cartridge. Gas from the spent cartridge recoils the bolt carrier, unlocking the bolt and cocking the firing pin during recoil.
