    • Improvements to an evaporative cooler having a direct drive fan include mutual adjustment of motor speed and fan blade pitch, a simplified, clog resistant water distribution system, a fan shroud creating minimal air flow noise, and a fouling sensor in the water supply. An adjustable variable frequency controller determines motor speed, which complements selected fan blade pitch to operate the fan at a desired speed consistent with avoiding resonance and vibration. The fan shroud has a canted top surface and rounded corners to minimize air flow disturbance. A sensor monitors the water supply for excessive mineral fouling, and activates a drain valve if a present threshold is encountered. A refill valve enables resupply with fresh, unfouled water.

    • In an industrial building housing a production operation utilizing a liquid material exposed to the atmosphere, a relationship is maintained between the plant atmosphere and the liquid material whereby the atmosphere is not receptive to vaporized or atomized portions of the liquid. The building is maintained under a slight positive pressure throughout to prevent random and uncontrolled infiltration of outside atmosphere. The temperature and relative humidity of the building atmosphere and the temperature of the liquid are closely monitored and maintained at levels relative to one another which assure that the building atmosphere is not receptive to evaporated or atomized liquid. Air handling units for supplying conditioned air to the building interior include heat exchangers and evaporators for regulating the wet bulb and dry bulb temperatures of the air being admitted to the building interior, and thus the temperature and relative humidity of the atmosphere within the building. The liquid material recirculates through a heat exchanger for removal of accumulated heat as necessary to maintain it at a temperature relative to the dry bulb/wet bulb temperatures of the building atmosphere below that at which it would tend to migrate by vaporization or atomization into the building atmosphere.

    • There is disclosed an air-conditioner is provided with an indoor unit including a blower fan for a warm or cold wind to the interior of a room, a louver for adjusting the direction of blowing of warm or cold wind from the fan in a range from the ceiling to the floor, a controller for controlling a volume of wind blowing off from the fan, a temperature of a conditioned air, and an angular adjustment of the louver, respectively, and a console panel permitting switching between cooling and heating modes, setting of a temperature, and setting of various modes. A controller provided in this air-conditioner comprises a temperature shifter for setting a raised temperature higher than a set temperature by a predetermined value when a user present in a room and subject to delivery of a conditioned air sets a sleep mode for comfortable sleep during heating, and a louver controller for adjusting an angle of the louver so as to blow warm air having a raised temperature, in the ceiling direction of the room in the sleep mode during heating. With such a configuration, even when a user is going to sleep or is going to wake up, there is no possibility that warm air directly blows him or her. A comfortable air-conditioned environment, particularly when a user is lying close to the floor can be provided.

    • The unnecessary removal of heated or cooled room air by fume hoods is prevented during off-peak periods through a manual and automatic fume hood ventilating system. Ventilation (exhaust) air quantities are reduced in response to operator and/or automated programmed control of the exhaust fan shaft speed. The safety integrity of the fume hood system is improved by providing the operator with visual and audible dynamic feedback of the system operating status. Room air balance is maintained through subsequent reset of the room supply air coincident with exhaust air quantity adjustment. Building make-up air balance is possible using individual instantaneous exhaust flow summary signals to control the outside air flow rate.
