    • Provided are a shock absorbing device that has high strength rigidity and good attenuation characteristics at the same time, a shock absorbing device that can be reduced in weight and size, a shock absorbing device that is free from degassing, and a shock absorbing device that has stable temperature characteristics. A shock absorbing device connects between a first member (110) and a second member (120) so as to be applicable to shock absorption therebetween. The shock absorbing device is provided with: a first shock absorbing member (130) and a second shock absorbing member (140); and a holding and connecting mechanism which holds the first member (110) via the first shock absorbing member (130) and the second shock absorbing member (140) and which is connected to the second member (120). The first shock absorbing member (130), the first member (110), and the second shock absorbing member (140) are disposed in that order. The holding and connecting mechanism sandwiches the first shock absorbing member (130), the first member (110), and the second shock absorbing member (140) from outside the first shock absorbing member (130) and the second shock absorbing member (140), thereby holding the first member (110) while applying stress to the first shock absorbing member (130) and the second shock absorbing member (140).

    • A damping (40) apparatus and method uses one or more tension elements (43, 44) fabricated from shape memory alloy to cycle through a superelastic stress-strain hysteresis to provide energy dissipation. The method and apparatus can be used for damping of any structures, such as machine parts, building structures, offshore platforms, and nanostructures that are subject to any type of vibration, such as acoustic, seismic, blast, impact, wave and wind. The tension (43, 44) elements can be wire loops or bands that are prestretched into approximately the middle of the stress-strain hysteresis. Such a damping (40) apparatus can be designed to have any selected stroke or force capacity by adjusting the length, thickness and number of the tension elements. Moreover, any type of complex force-deflection hysteresis can be designed, for example, a triangular flag, a rectangle, a rectangular flag, a bow tie, or a staging characteristic that provides for hardening or softening.

    • An actuator (10) develops a displacement from a force; the actuator employs active tension elements (20) which comprise a fiber or fibers which shorten under activation, for example, shape memory alloy fibers; the fiber or fibers are entrained between opposed, spaced apart support members (12, 26), typically a stack of spaced apart disks; the entrained fiber or fibers define a cage of crossing lengths of fiber in symmetrical array, typically a helicoidal array. Activation of the fibers shortens the fiber lengths producing a relative displacement of the support members which can be translated to a component which is to be displaced, and to which the actuator is operably connected, in another embodiment the active tension elements stretch under stress so that instead of an actuator there is formed a shock absorber which eliminates displacement with a force.
