    • A centrifugally activated bearing is disclosed. The bearing includes an annular member that extends laterally and radially from a central axis. A rotating member that rotates about the central axis relative to the annular member is also included. The rotating member has an interior chamber that surrounds the central axis and in which the annular member is suspended. Furthermore, the interior chamber has a concave shape for retaining a lubricant therein while the rotating member is at rest and for retaining a lubricant therein while the rotating member is rotating. The concave shape is such that while the rotating member is rotating a centrifugal force causes a lubricant to be forced away from the central axis to form a cylindrical surface having an axis collinear with the central axis. This centrifugally displaced lubricant provides restoring forces to counteract lateral displacement during operation.

    • In a friction bearing system for a rapidly rotating shaft of an apparatus for measuring the optical absorption of a sample under analysis by way of an optical radiation source projecting a beam on the sample, the chopper system for the periodical interruption of the beam includes a rotatably mounted chopper disk provided with light-admitting openings and a controlled-speed drive system, as well as a radiation detector for the light affected by the sample. Both ends of the shaft fixedly joined to the chopper disk are provided with pivots corresponding to bushes, one of which is held by a spider which is affixed to the housing part that holds the other bush. The spider is provided with a bore running at an angle to the shaft, and the longitudinal axis of this bore intersects the axis of rotation of the shaft. A magnet is held for longitudinal displacement in the bore and its field acts upon a ring disposed on the shaft in order to assure the quiet and wear-free spinning of the chopper disk.

    • A suspending arrangement for moving coils of electrical instruments of the type wherein the coil is suspended between two coaxial tensioned torsion wires which tend to maintain the coil in a zero position. Each torsion wire is provided with two spaced clamping members which engage springy retainers provided on a support on the one hand and on the coil on the other hand. Each clamping member includes two sections whose inner faces engage the wire and whose external surfaces meet the inner faces along sharply defined edges abutting against the respective retainers. The clamping members are disks, spheres or rollers and can be centered in sockets or recesses of the respective retainers.

    • The maintenance of a substantially constant relative positioning between the path of a movable element and a support therefor, for example, a rotary roll and a bearing support therefor, by providing a phase-changing lubricating and pressure-bearing medium between the element and support. The selected medium is characterized by its capability of assuming a solid-state adjacent to the interface between the movable element and support and a creeping state remotely therefrom, as determined by varying temperature and pressure conditions, as exemplified by ice, derived from frozen water, organic compounds such as wax, paraffin, etc., having sharp transition points from the liquid to the solid state, and metals and alloys thereof of low melting points having similar sharp transition characteristics. A departure from the desired constant positioning is sensed to control the replenishment of the phase-changing medium in the liquid state to the mass thereof remote from the interface for transformation to the solid state by heat-exchange means which is operable to restore the parts to the desired position. The system is especially effective in the maintenance of the desired position of the working parts in heavy-duty machinery such as the rolls in cluster-type rolling mills.
