    • A linear drive mechanism comprising a moveably guided output member (12). The output member (12) is guided on a supporting device (15) in a supporting area (13) of the housing (1). A position determining device (54) protrudes laterally from the output member (12). The position determining device moves along a position determining area (55) during the axial movement of the output member (12). The support device (15) extends only over part of the perimeter of the output member (12), wherein the output member (12) is exposed along a section of the perimeter so that an open space (67) is provided, thereby forming part of a position determining area (55) which can be traversed by the position determining element (54).     • The invention relates to a piston and cylinder unit whose piston rod is provided with a rack extending along it. The rack is in mesh with a ring of teeth (such as the teeth of a toothed belt or the teeth of a gear wheel) adapted to revolve about one axis (in the case of a gear wheel) or about at least two axes (in the case of a toothed belt). Such meshing engagement takes place in every position of the piston rod. When the piston rod is moved in the direction of its length the ring of teeth revolves about at least one axis and rotates a means for influencing the motion of the piston rod. Such means may for example be a liquid brake or a synchro transmitter connected with a NC unit controlling the supply of driving fluid to the piston and cylinder unit.

    • Apparatus for the determination of the location and/or distance traveled by a piston in a cylinder. This apparatus can easily be integrated into shock absorbers, vibration dampers and pneumatic springs, and exhibits a high degree of insensitivity to at least electrical interference, therefore being particularly well-suited for operation under unfavorable ambient conditions. As a result of the use of the most modern semiconductor technology and a suitable geometric arrangement, a very good resolution can be achieved, along with an automatic recognition of the direction of piston travel. Such an apparatus has a number of semiconductor elements; in one embodiment, in a beam fastened inside the cylinder or, in another embodiment, in the hollow piston rod. These semiconductor elements are arranged so that, over the axial length of the piston stroke, the distances between two neighboring semiconductor elements correspond to a specified measurement value resolution. The semiconductor elements are connected with an electronic calculating or computing system, and the component opposite the semiconductor elements is an electrode which generates an electric field. This electrode is connected in operation to a source of electrical voltage or a ground.

    • A vacuum motor which is especially adapted for use in a speed control mechanism for an automotive vehicle in which a flexible diaphragm is positioned in the housing of the motor and cooperates with the housing to form a chamber. Means are provided communicating with the chamber and the flexible diaphragm for applying a varying pressure to the chamber and hence the diaphragm so that the diaphragm is moved as a function of the pressure applied thereto. The diaphragm is adapted to be connected to a movable controller means for controlling the speed of the vehicle in accordance with the position of the diaphragm. Movable means are coupled to the diaphragm and are positioned within the chamber. The vacuum motor includes electrical circuit means and said movable means cooperates with the electrical circuit means for varying the value of a parameter of the electrical circuit means as a function of the position of the diaphragm and the movable means.
