    • The invention relates to a device for pneumatically operating a tool which can be driven by means of pressure, such as especially, pneumatic pliers (1). The device has a cylinder (3) comprising one or more pneumatically operated, nonpositively fitted pistons (5) arranged in a row, for generating a translatory force. The respective piston rods (6) of the pistons (5) are sealed against the preceding piston (5, 34) and guided in cylinder covers (13) by means of a seal (24), such as a lip seal. Components such as a wedge piston (34) are functionally connected to the pistons, said wedge piston being coupled to a cuneiform wedge (35), for transferring the translatory force and for operating the tool. The pistons (5, 34) are supported by at least one piston guidance strip (23), in the direction against the inner wall of the cylinder.

    • A welding system (10) for real-time weld quality detection during resistance welding of a workpiece (26, 28) has a sensor assembly (66) including a winding (68) and a core (70) mounted generally coaxially within the cylinder (32) of the welding gun (30). A piston (34, 36) and piston rod (38) assembly are mounted for coaxial movement within the cylinder (32). The piston rod (38) has an end protruding from the cylinder (32) for affixing an electrode (16) thereto. Axial movement of the piston rod (38) relative to the cylinder (32) causes axial movement of the core (70) relative to the winding (68) to vary a length of core and winding overlap. The sensor assembly (66) produces an output signal based on the length of core and winding overlap to indicate piston rod position relative to the cylinder (32). Weld control logic (76) receiving the sensor assembly output controls welding of the workpiece (26, 28) in real-time.

    • An actuator assembly comprising a first cylinder housing (13) a first piston and a second cylinder housing (12) a second piston.
