    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve an early completion of an automatic restart by performing fuel combustion as early as possible after a start of the automatic restart while improving initial fuel combustion after the start of the automatic restart.SOLUTION: At an automatic restart of an internal combustion engine 1, when a stop position of a piston 6 is in a first start execution range that is further on an advance side than a threshold in an intake stroke, fuel injection is performed in a cylinder corresponding to the piston 6 at the beginning of the automatic restart and thereafter ignition is performed in an initial compression stroke after the start of the automatic restart in the same cylinder. When the stop position of the piston 6 is in a second start execution range that is further to a retard side than the threshold in the intake stroke, initial fuel injection is performed in a cylinder that next enters an intake stroke after the beginning of automatic restart and initial ignition is performed in a subsequent compression stroke in the same cylinder. The threshold is set to a value on the advance side when the displacement thereof from the value of a crank angle during the automatic stop at the completion of the automatic stop is equal to or larger than a reference value, and set to a value on the retard side when the displacement is less than the reference value.
