    • An ambiance lighting system for a vehicular passenger compartment has a variable color light output which is automatically responsive to temperature changes. First and second light sources of different colors (e.g., blue and red) are positioned immediately behind the air discharge vents and are selectively energized by a control circuit so that the first light source radiates light through the vent when the temperature falls below a predetermined value and the second light sources energizes the second color of light when the air temperature rises above a predetermined value. Sensors are used to detect the temperature of air, preferably in the ducting plenum. Various control strategies can be deployed to achieve aesthetically interesting light presentations which enhance ambiance within the passenger compartment.

    • A lighting device and system for illuminating the interior of a vehicle, aircraft or building is provided. The lighting device and system includes a channel case made from a thermally conductive material, including aluminum. The channel case has a bottom edge and two opposed side edges forming an interior space A circuit board is disposed within the interior space of the channel case and the circuit board includes circuit traces on the top, bottom or both sides of the circuit board. A heat transfer device is attached to the bottom of the circuit board and is further attached to the bottom of the channel case.     • A lighting system for preferentially illuminating the seating area of a mass-transit vehicle passenger compartment while minimizing the illumination of an aisle and of side windows of the vehicle. A lighting fixture is mounted in a cornice area of the vehicle above the seating area. The fixture includes an air duct extension panel having an outer edge that connects to a sidewall of the vehicle and extends horizontally inward over the seating area. An elongated lamp housing is integrally formed as a unitary piece with the air duct extension panel and is disposed along an inner edge of the extension panel opposite the outer edge. A face panel connects between a ceiling of the vehicle and the extension panel inner edge. The face panel spaces the lamp housing downward from the vehicle ceiling toward the seating area to maximize seating area illumination. The air duct extension panel spaces the lamp housing inwardly away from the sidewall and side windows to minimize side window illumination.

    • A fixture for a fluorescent lamp includes a diffuser panel. The diffuser panel has a frame and longitudinal elements supported by the frame and spaced apart from one another. At least some of the elements are constructed of a material to allow diffusion of impinging light. Preferred materials are translucent or transparent, such as glass or plastic. The diffuser panel also functions as an air diffuser. Provision of a nozzle in the base of the fixture allows air to flow through the panel by a sucking effect created by high velocity forced air flowing through the nozzle. This results in fixture cleaning and temperature equalization. The fixture is particularly adapted to be mounted in a moving vehicle. For this purpose, the panel is designed to be tamper-resistant and to provide easy maintenance. The diffuser panel, when a latch is opened, may be lowered by rotation to provide access to the lamp and ballast. When the fixture is installed in a public vehicle, a handrail is provided which forms part of the panel lowering mechanism. Other arrangements provide a fixture having a diffuser with a central open portion and a pair of side panels extending across the ceiling of a vehicle. A pair of nozzle elements are disposed above each side panel. Again, high velocity air directed through one portion in of a nozzle element will cause air to be drawn through the open central portion of the fixture. Either the entire diffuser or the side panels may be lowered to clean the fixture or replace the lamps.
