    • PURPOSE:To enhance mill constants and to rearrange rolls easily by making intermediate roll chocks fixable with the aids of wedges provided to the upper end of a housing window. CONSTITUTION:An open-top type housing is constituted of a housing main body 10 and a housing cap 23. In the inside of this housing, rolls 3, 6, 9 are supported through roller bearings 2, 5, 8, and upper, intermediate, and lower roll chocks are disposed. Further, supporting distance-pieces 13 are attached to the lower part of the housing window. Moreover, fixing distance-pieces 17 are fixed with the aids of wedges 21 set at the upper end of the housing window. And the intermediate roll chocks 4 are fixed from the upper side with the aids of the pieces 17. By using this three high rolling mill, mill constants are enhanced and roll rearrangement is easily performed.

Then, the spacers F, F are removed from the gaps berween the chocks C, E and C, E on the side of fitting holes 5, 6; the spacers F, F are interposed between new and old upper and lower rolls B, D and B', D' respectively only on one side for upholding the upper rolls. Then, rolls B', D' are horizontally pushed out, the chocks C, C are supported by cylinders 7, 8 and the sapcer F is pulled away. The rolls B, D taken out of the stand are transparted by cranes, etc., to a prescribed place.

    • PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for a lift-type table and to insert smoothly a material to be rolled into rolls by inserting liners between upper and lower surfaces of vertical roll chocks and pieces and making the center height of a vertical roll adjustable. Further, because the height of the pass line of an universal mill coincides with the height of a roll table, a material to be rolled is smoothly inserted into horizontal rolls and the vertical rolls 3.

    • A method of making a pair of rotary die cylinders with lands having coacting cutting edges which cut blanks from a web of material passing through the nip of the rotating dies. In cross section each land has an outer face and a pair of spaced apart side faces which are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the chord of the outer face to provide a clean cut and facilitate release of the cut blank from the cutting blades as it emerges from the nip of the dies. The die cylinders are journalled for rotation by recesses with frusto conical locating surfaces in their opposed ends. Each die cylinder is made by machining the recesses in the opposed ends of a generally cylindrical workpiece of tool steel and then utilizing the recesses to locate and orient the workpiece relative to a cutting tool to produce a cylindrical surface on the workpiece concentric with the axis of the recesses and then to machine away portions of the periphery of the cylindrical surface to form the cutting blade lands thereon. After machining is completed the cutting blade lands may be hardened by heat treating utilizing a laser beam directed onto the lands to heat them at an elevated temperature so that upon quenching they are hardened without any substantial hardening and resulting distortion of the core or body of the workpiece.
