    • A method of making a pair of rotary die cylinders with lands having coacting cutting edges which cut blanks from a web of material passing through the nip of the rotating dies. In cross section each land has an outer face and a pair of spaced apart side faces which are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the chord of the outer face to provide a clean cut and facilitate release of the cut blank from the cutting blades as it emerges from the nip of the dies. The die cylinders are journalled for rotation by recesses with frusto conical locating surfaces in their opposed ends. Each die cylinder is made by machining the recesses in the opposed ends of a generally cylindrical workpiece of tool steel and then utilizing the recesses to locate and orient the workpiece relative to a cutting tool to produce a cylindrical surface on the workpiece concentric with the axis of the recesses and then to machine away portions of the periphery of the cylindrical surface to form the cutting blade lands thereon. After machining is completed the cutting blade lands may be hardened by heat treating utilizing a laser beam directed onto the lands to heat them at an elevated temperature so that upon quenching they are hardened without any substantial hardening and resulting distortion of the core or body of the workpiece.

    • A mill stand for a four-mill has a short-stroke hydraulic rolling pressure cylinder at the top of each housing. Variations in size of back-up rolls are taken up at the top of the mill by a series of graduated filler blocks positioned around a quadrant so as to form a circular staircase. The staircase is rotated about a vertical axis to bring the desired step between cylinder and roll chock. The lower roll set rests on straight staircases which are moved transversely of the housings on the conventional roll sled. Between the bottom of the sled and the bottom of each housing is a low-angle wedge positioned to raise the lower roll set an amount equal to one step of the staircase. The stand is aligned to the strip pass line by operation of the rolling pressure cylinders.

    • A cartridge loadable combination mill for rolling beam, structural or plate products. The combination mill includes a pair of cartridge or cartridge-like loaded mill stands, the first of which has a movable mill housing and the second of which is adaptable to being moved out of the mill line. The cartridges contain a pair of horizontal and vertical rolls that are aligned and adjusted prior to insertion into the mill stands through the mill housing windows. A four station cartridge transfer means having alternative stations simultaneously alignable with both mill stand windows is provided for supporting, positioning, and transferring work roll cartridges to the mill stands for insertion therein. A pair of movable table rolls with side guards adjustable to the maximum width of the first mill stand are movable either along the mill line or out of said line.
