摘要： Apparatus and method are disclosed for detection of overlapped objects moving along a defined path. A light radiation source directs a light beam toward the path. As an object moves into the light beam, reflected light is received by two light sensors. An edge of an overlapping object moving along the defined path substantially blocks the light reflected from the underlying object from being received by one light sensor. The edges of an overlapping object are detected when a there is a difference in the amount of reflected light received by the light sensors and there exists a substantial rate of change in the amount of reflected light (indicative of a true edge of an overlapping object as opposed to warps, wrinkles, creases, etc. on the surface of an object) received by either light sensor due to the substantial blockage of reflected light by the edge.

摘要： A parcel detection system (A) works in connection with a stream of parcels (B), such as might be encountered in connection with bulk mail sorting apparatus. A presence of multiple parcels traveling adjacent one another is detected with a line scan charge coupled device (34). A transducer array is disposed perpendicularly to the stream flow. Specular illumination of edges of the parcels is completed to facilitate capturing an image in the CCD array (34). An analog signal, obtained from the array, includes information representative of a number of adjacent parcels. This information is processed to provide a signal representative of a number of parcels traveling adjacent to one another in the stream.

摘要： A singulated stream of products comprised of both single and overlapping products (200) is transported through a scanning zone along a transport path (100). Each single or overlapping product (200) defines a shadow on the transport path (100) that is analyzed to determine the presence of product multiples in the product shadow by measuring the width and length of the product shadow. If the length of the product shadow exceeds by more than a predetermined amount the average length of previously measured shadows having a similar width, the shadow likely contains two or more overlapping products (200). As the product shadow moves through the scanning zone, each product included therein is scanned for affixed bar codes by a plurality of bar code scanners. If two different bar codes or two identical bar codes from mutually exclusive scanners are recorded for a single product shadow, then the shadow likely contains two or more overlapping products (200).

摘要： A sorting system for mail items includes sorting registers, a storage module operating on a last-in/first-out principle, a sorting circuit to convey a stream of mail items. The sorting registers and the storage module are connected via switch points to the sorting circuit, wherein the storage module comprises a storage area and an insertion function. An extraction function extracts mail items from the storage area, and a process controller controls the mail item stream and the switch points. The process controller sets, if there is a conveyance fault, part of the switch points so mail items intended for the faulty sorting registers are introduced into the storage area. When the fault is rectified and/or a predefined occupancy level is reached, mail items stored in the storage area are extracted by adjusting a remaining feeding of mail items into the mail item stream, and fed to the sorting registers.
