    • A robotic appliance (10) with a joystick sensor (94) and associated methods of operation are provided. In one embodiment, the robotic appliance includes: a housing (12,14), a joystick sensor (94) configured to provide sensed signals that vary as the robotic appliance (10) traverses a surface area and comes in contact with an obstacle, a controller adapted to receive the sensed signals, wherein the controller determines the direction of the obstacle in relation to the robotic appliance (10) and an x-y plane corresponding to the surface area based on the sensed signals and controls the robotic appliance (10) based on the direction of the obstacle, traction means, and a bumper (18) that defines a periphery for a front section and a rear section of the robotic appliance in the x-y plane, wherein the bumper (18) is in operative communication with the joystick sensor (94) so that movement of the bumper (18) in relation to the housing varies the sensed signals.

    • A vacuum cleaner includes a housing adapted for movement on a subjacent surface and a nozzle defined in the housing, the nozzle having an opening. A brushroll tube (10), having first and second ends and a longitudinal axis, is rotatably mounted to the housing adjacent the nozzle opening. At least one cleaning element (18) protrudes from the brushroll tube (10). A shaft (26) is located in the brushroll tube (10) and extends along the longitudinal axis thereof. A stator (52) is rigidly mounted on the shaft (26). A cylinder (20) surrounds the shaft (26) and the stator (52) and is spaced therefrom. The cylinder (20) is rigidly connected to the brushroll tube (10). A permanent magnet rotor (50) is fixedly mounted to an interior surface of the cylinder (20). The permanent magnet rotor (50) overlies and is coaxial with the stator (52) and is spaced therefrom. The rotor (50) and stator (52) form a motor (4) for rotating the brushroll (10) tube wherein the rotor (50) is driven by changes in induced magnetic fields in the stator (52).

    • A carpet extractor includes a base assembly (1) including a housing (10) which selectively receives a recovery tank (22) for collecting dirty cleaning fluid. A first supply tank (14) for concentrated cleaning fluid and a second supply tank (15) for clean water are mounted on an inverted Y-shaped handle assembly (12). The handle assembly (12) includes a central member (334) with a hand grip (336) at its upper end and two splayed leg members (338,342,340,344), which define a triangular shaped gap therebetween. The two tanks (14,15) are removably mounted in the gap. The cleaning fluid tank (14) is supported on a shelf (346), which spans the gap between the leg members (338,342,340,344). The arrangement of tanks (14,15) in the gap allows for large capacity tanks, a well-balanced handle (12), ease of removal of the recovery tank (22) without the need for removing either of the two supply tanks (14,15), and ease of refill of the supply tanks (14,15).
