    • A system for attaching an object to a workpiece including an anchor and an installation tool is provided. The anchor includes a body having a transverse cross-section slightly smaller than the transverse cross-section of a hole in a surface of the workpiece in which it is to be deployed, and at least two barbs. The body has a distal portion having an inner end, a proximal portion having an inner end, and a middle portion connecting the inner ends of the distal and proximal portions respectively. The barbs extend from the first end of the distal portion axially and radially outwardly to outer ends located radially outwardly of an axial projection of the maximum transverse cross-section of the distal portion. The barbs are located in channels having bases which extend parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body in the middle section and thereafter slant outwardly relative to the longitudinal axis of the body as they extend to the outer end of the proximal portion. Each barb is curved in its normal unstressed state, but is capable of being deformed into a substantially straight configuration. The anchor assembly is deployed by an installation tool which includes an elongated shaft having a distal end and a proximal end, tubular means associated with said distal end of said shaft adapted to receive and hold said middle and proximal portions of said anchor body, and plunger means adapted for engagement with said outer end of said proximal portion of said anchor body, said plunger means being axially movable through said tubular means so as to expell said anchor from said tubular means and to drive said anchor into said hole. A method of attaching an object to a workpiece utilizing such anchors and installation tools also is provided.

    • A novel suture anchor comprising (a) a coupling member having a first end portion and a reduced second end portion, and a shoulder formed at the junction of the first end portion and the reduced second end portion, (b) at least one barb, the barb having a first end and a second end and being curved in its normal unstressed state and being capable of being elastically deformed to a substantially straight configuration, the barb being attached to the coupling member so that the second end of the barb is substantially displaced from the coupling member when the barb is in its normal unstressed state but is capable of being aligned with the coupling member when the barb is deformed to a substantially straight length, and (c) attachment means for attaching one end of a suture to the suture anchor. The suture anchor is installed in a hole in bone using a suitable installation tool by aligning the second end of the barb with the coupling member, inserting the anchor in the hole, and then permitting the second end of the barb to assume a displaced position whereby the barb and coupling member are driven into engagement with the sidewall of the hole.

    • A needle assembly for passing suture within the body includes a rigid needle having a proximal end and a pointed distal end, and an opening in the distal end extending through the needle for retaining a suture therein; a stop element positioned on the needle proximate to, and spaced from, the proximal end of the needle; a sheath having a lengthwise bore therethrough for slidably retaining the needle; and a lock member engageable with the needle stop element to prevent distal movement of the needle in the sheath bore. The needle distal end is movable to an exposed position for passing the assembly through tissue, and is movable to a shielded position within the sheath for passing the assembly safely past the tissue which is not to be penetrated. There is further contemplated a method for passing suture within the body, using the needle assembly.

    • A bone anchor installation tool is provided comprising a body having a distal end surface and a proximal end surface. An axial passageway extends between the distal end surface and the proximal end surface, with the distal end of the axial passageway being sized to receive at least a portion of a bone anchor. A shaft is slidably disposed within the axial passageway. The shaft is adapted to move between (i) a first retracted position wherein the shaft's distal end surface is withdrawn sufficiently far into the interior of the axial passageway so as to allow at least a portion of a bone anchor to be received therein, and (ii) a second extended position wherein the shaft's distal end surface projects out of the distal end of the axial passageway. A peripheral rib is formed on the exterior surface of the body so as to be yieldably engaged by a rib engaging element connected to the shaft as the shaft moves from its first retracted position to its second extended position. In use, when the shaft is in its first retracted position, the interaction of the peripheral rib and the rib engaging element will prevent the shaft from moving into its second extended position until a sufficient distally-directed force is applied to the shaft so as to cause the rib engaging element to yield out of engagement with the peripheral rib.
