    • Disclosed is a variable-magnification copying machine which provides means for easily performing copying operations using variable magnifications against the desired copying paper from either a standard or an off-standard size draft paper.The preferred embodiment provides means for automatically setting the magnification by first manually inputting data denoting the length of the horizontal and vertical edges of the draft paper, followed by computing the ratio between the horizontal and vertical lengths by applying the input length data of the draft paper and the preset size of the available copying paper so that the smaller ratio produced from the computation can be eventually set as the correct magnification.

    • In local memory that stores image data, the image data is invalidated to prevent leakage of the image data. Input image data is stored in local memory 10 and subjected to image processing, and then it is saved in a hard disk device 4. The image data that is read from the hard disk device 4 is stored in the local memory 10, and then printed as an image from a printing portion 3a or transmitted from a communication section 5 in data communication. When image data input is completed, image data is left stored in the local memory 10. Therefore, the image data is overwritten with random data and invalidated so that the image data is unreadable. Also, when image data processing is completed, image data is invalidated.

    • An image forming device is a digital composite machine which provides a plurality of image input modes in which image information is inputted in different forms, respectively. The image forming device is provided with (1) feed devices for supplying a plurality of types of recording materials, (2) a display device for displaying information regarding recording materials which are ready to be fed from the feed devices, (3) mode keys for selecting one from among the plurality of image input modes, (4) selecting keys for selecting one recording material on which image information is to be recorded, from among the recording materials displayed by the display device, (5) a recording section for recording image information inputted in the mode selected through the mode keys, onto the recording material selected through the selecting keys, and (6) a CPU for determining information regarding the recording materials to be displayed by the display section, depending on the mode selected. This arrangement ensures that the image forming device is capable of recording for reproduction of inputted images on suitable recording materials, selecting recording materials so as to be suitable to the input modes, respectively, and at every mode setting, displaying and selecting information regarding suitable recording materials in appropriate forms.

    • A data-processing system consisting of a portable terminal device and a copying machine can effectively work with protection against breakage of data stored in the terminal device. The data-processing system is constructed to work on the following principle: When a given period is measured by a timer for starting the power saving mode, a portable terminal device provides a copying machine with a signal informing of starting the power-saving mode. The copying machine, which received the power-saving-mode starting signal, provides in later the portable terminal device a signal requiring the terminal to cancel the power-saving-mode. When a given period is measured by a timer for starting the power saving mode, the copying machine provides the portable terminal device with a signal requiring the terminal device to start the power-saving mode. A CPU, which received information on request of power-saving-mode, executes the power saving mode. The portable terminal device and the copying machine as the former being mounted on the latter can simultaneously execute the power saving mode, preliminarily sheltering data in the storage.
