    • A Content Request System (CRS) (300) is operated to request the downloading of content from a Content Server (CS) (100) to a Content Viewing System (CVS) (600) using a proxy and an Intermediary Server (IS) (400). CRS (300) obtains parameters related to the download including at least an identification of data to be downloaded, the identity of a CS (100) containing the identified data, and the identity of an IS (400) to which the identified data is to be downloaded. CRS (300) creates a proxy that facilitates the downloading of the identified data from the identified CS (100), the proxy containing the obtained parameters. The proxy is transmitted to the identified IS (400) which uses the proxy to download the identified data from the identified CS (100) in accordance with the parameters contained in the proxy. The identified IS (400) then transfers the downloaded data to CVS (600).

    • A Video-on-Demand Server architecture (100, 200, 300) transmits a plurality of pre-coded programs having different bit rates across a fixed bandwidth channel (11). For each program, a generator (120-12P-1, 110, 210) generates a plurality of different bit rate representations for each program. Each generator also provides control information at each of a plurality of successive time windows T for each bit rate representation. The control information provides a bit rate and a quality measure during each time window T. The control information enables a statistical multiplexer (16, 160, 260) to select a bit rate representation for each program during each time window T to maximize the quality of the selected representations while not exceeding the total available channel capacity.

    • A satellite television ground system, particularly for a make or break satellite television signal system, includes an outdoor unit and an indoor unit that are in communication with each other via a single coaxial cable and an optional separate single conductor for power. The satellite television ground system is operative to measure and reverse frequency conversion errors utilizing DSP techniques, allowing for more precise generation and transmission of uplink signals from the satellite television ground system. Control data for the system is sent via a low data rate connection on a power cable thereof, or by a narrowband signaling channel via a coax cable. The system also utilizes a single reference oscillator to drive the various frequency synthesizers and the like. The satellite television ground system utilizes related oscillators for the uplink and downlink sections. Carrier frequency offset in the downlink is measured in a carrier tracking loop part of a television signal demodulator. The carrier frequency offset of the downlink is utilized to synthesize various frequency signals for the uplink and downlink sections to correct frequency errors. For the uplink section, the carrier frequency offset of the downlink is reversed in the uplink. If the uplink is on a different frequency, the measured offset of the system master oscillator can be scaled by different synthesizer ratios.
