    • PURPOSE:To produce a ferrous sintered member excellent in fatigue strength by compacting a powder of a low alloy steel with a specific composition, sintering the resulting green compact in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, and subjecting the resulting sintered compact to heat treatment and to shot peening treatment. CONSTITUTION:A powder of a low alloy steel having a composition containing, by weight, 0.5-10%, in total, of one or >=2 elements selected from a group consisting of Mo, Cr, Ni, Mn, Cu, Nb, V, Ti, and C is compacted into the desired shape so as to be formed into a green compact having a density of 85-95% of the theoretical density, and this green compact is sintered in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at 1150-1350 deg.C. After heat-treating the resulting sintered compact, shot peening treatment is applied to the surface of the sintered compact to make the surface dense. By this method the ferrous sintered member which has a three-layered surface layer in which densities, compressive residual stresses, and Vickers hardness in a surface primary, a secondary, and a tertiary layer are regulated to >=95%, >=93%, and 88-95% based on the theoretical densities, to 50-120kg/mm , , and , and to 600-900, 500-800, and 500-800, respectively, in the order named and also has superior fatigue strength can be produced.
