    • The solution involves the use of two or more motors to drive a common mechanism. The single control loop includes a position sensing device coupled to only a first of the plurality of servo motors and generating a position signal. A signal comparator receives the position signal and compares the position signal with a predetermined desired position based on a desired motion profile. The difference from the actual position and the motion profile is output as a position error signal. A signal converter receives the position error signal and derives a conversion signal based on the error signal. The conversion signal is provided to a plurality of signal amplifiers, which in turn are coupled to the plurality of servo motors. The amplifiers provide power to the motors for driving the mechanical load.

    • An envelope hopper having a plurality of bottom rods to form a supporting surface for supporting a stack of envelopes and a paddle to push the envelopes towards an envelope feeder at the downstream end. A scrub wheel is rotatably mounted on a fixed, rotation axis on the paddle and is in contact with one of the bottom rods. The rotation axis of the scrub wheel is oriented at an angle relative to the rotation axis of the contacting rod, so that when the contacting rod rotates, it causes the scrub wheel to rotate, thereby producing a force on the paddle urging the paddle to move towards the downstream end. Preferably, the envelope hopper has a side rod on one side of the envelope stack, and the supporting surface is tilted from the horizontal surface, so that the envelopes are moved towards the side rod by gravity in order to register against the side rod. Preferably, the side rod also rotates in order to reduce the friction between the envelope stack and the side rod.

    • A methodology for generating a motion profile for an axis of a motor in a mailing apparatus, the linear or angular motion of the motor axis imparting a motion to a sheet or envelope being conveyed by the mailing apparatus. The methodology includes four processes for generating a segment of a motion profile, depending on whether, for the segment, absolute positional synchronism (of the motor axis to be controlled relative to another motor axis) is needed, or whether a so-called quick step is needed, i.e. a change in velocity corresponding to acceleration that varies during the step. The processes include: forward integration, given the jerk (acceleration per unit time) and starting acceleration as well as initial values of position and velocity; non-parabolic displacement mapping (sometimes called electronic gearing) relating the motion of the axis to be controlled to the motion of another axis where the function expressing the mapping is not parabolic in the commanded or actual position of the other axis; integration based on a velocity equation that is parabolic in time; and a parabolic displacement mapping, i.e. a displacement mapping using a function that is parabolic in the actual or commanded position of a reference axis.

A method of calibrating the printing assembly includes aligning a first reference associated with the printer with a second reference associated with the support, transporting an item on the transport path, printing a pattern on the item using a first printing element and a second printing element, determining a correction value from the pattern, and rotating the printer relative to the support in an amount corresponding to the correction value to substantially align the printing elements with the transport path.
