In one embodiment, the method comprises defining a function f , where f(x,y) = f(y , x) , and for each of first and second mobile devices, evaluating f with one of x and y having the value of the PIN of the respective mobile device. In one embodiment, when a digital signature is successfully verified in a signature verification operation, the public key used to verify that digital signature is cached. If the keys match, the digital signature can be successfully verified without requiring that a signature verification operation in which some data is decoded using the public key be performed.

In one broad aspect, a message management server generates certificate identification data from a message that uniquely identifies a certificate associated with the message.
