[Also in Divisions F2 and G3] A throttling device at the outlet 23 of a liquefied petroleum gas tank, e.g. a gas fuelled lighter-tank, is formed by a plate-like member 27 of textile or sponge-like material, e.g. a tangled fibre fleece impregnated with natural rubber, synthetic rubber, thermoplastic plastics or regenerated cellulose, which is provided with hollow spaces, resulting from the washing out of soluble materials, e.g. inorganic salts, starch or urea, and is compressed between a gas impermeable plate 26, on a felt plate 25, and a valve seat element 36 which is sealed within the outlet by packing 39 and is adjustably loaded by a threaded member 29, whereby the throttling effect on gas flowing radially inwardly through member 26 to the outlet port 35, controlled by a spring-loaded resilient plug 33, is variable. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) throttled gas flow may occur in either direction through a plate-like throttle member 10 backed by an impermeable plate 6 and adjustably loaded, between a shoulder and a flange of coupled pipes 1 and 2, by an externally threaded coupling nut 7 which may be automatically adjustable by a mechanism in dependancy on the pressure in outlet pipe 2; alternatively, a stop valve may be arranged in pipes 1 or 2 or both and an additional impermeable plate, having a central outlet, may be provided on the side of outlet 2 where this is of large diameter.

    • 1290544 Gas fuelled lighters A RACEK 31 Oct 1969 [4 Nov 1968] 53566/69 Heading F4F A gas fuelled lighter wherein the height of the flame may be altered includes a tank 1 with a valve comprising a porous throttling member 12 which is contained in and on which pressure is exerted by a cup-shaped adjusting member 11 movable relative to the gas tank 1, the tank 1 being sealed by a diaphragm 23 which is gripped by inner gripping means in the vicinity of the adjusting member 11 and is also gripped by outer gripping means radially beyond the adjusting member 11. As shown, the inner gripping means comprise a flange 21 of the adjusting member 11 and a ring 22 which is shrunk on to the adjusting member 11 with a setting member in the form of a hollow screw 3 for moving the adjusting member 11 bearing on the ring 22; the outer gripping means comprise a flange 15 of a humped member 14 and a clamp ring 24. The diaphragm 23 extends outwardly beyond the outer gripping means and contacts the inner wall of the tank 1 and the diaphragm also contacts a retaining member 16 which conically flares from the flange 15. The adjusting member 12 also contains a plug 13 having a serrated outer periphery which plug bears on the humped member 14. In use, a hollow valve stem 4 is raised by known means and gas which is stored in liquefied form in bibulous material 20 in the fuel tank 1 flows through openings 28 in the humped member 14 over the serrated outer periphery of the plug 13 and then through the throttling member 12 to escape through the hollow valve stem 4. The height of the flame may be varied by rotation of the hollow screw 3 to compress the throttling member 12 more or less. The setting member may comprise a cam instead of the screw. Also the diaphragm need not extend beyond its outer gripping means, a seperate sealing ring being used as an outer seal.

    • 1,025,452. Gas-fuelled lighters. A. RACEK. Jan. 17, 1964 [Jan. 25, 1963], No. 2201/64. Heading F4F. A gas-lighter has a replaceable gas tank 20, Fig. 1, having a gas outlet valve 22 closed by a spring 24 and with a shoulder 25 on liftable valve stem 23; a disc-like rocker lever 26 permanently surrounds stem 23 and is engaged by a nose 27 on arms 7 pivoted to the part cylindrical case 1 on pivots, the arms 7 being fixed to cover 3 and attached to the limbs 19 of a member 18 whereby an over-centre spring 16 biases the cover to the closed or open position. A housing part 14, pivoted on pivot 5, engages below a slide member 13 supporting flint spring 12. The friction wheel 6 is rotated on opening of the cover 3 by a driver 8 on the cover engaging and rotating a driver wheel 9 connected to wheel 6. On opening of the cover, arms 7 pivot rocker lever 26 against a fulcrum 28 to engage shoulder 25 and raise the valve stem 23 to open the valve. The fulcrum 28 is of sprung metal and is attached to the case 1, a portion 31 being engaged by a conical ring 32 which is slidable to adjust the amount by which the fulcrum 28 extends into the case 1 and hence the degree of opening of valve 22. In Fig. 2, not shown, the stop shoulder is a nut which is adjusted on the stem to vary the valve opening; and in Fig. 3, not shown, the tank has a screw-threaded engagement with the case to adjust the rocker lever range. In Fig. 4, the nose 27c engages between two teeth 47 on a lever part 26c which bears on a fulcrum part 48 on the tank, the valve stem 23c being raised by a member 35 against spring 24c to move valve member 43 from passage 41. Throttling members 45 are inserted between a plate 40 and portion 39 of the tank and by screwing valve member 38 into portion 39 the members are accordingly compressed to control the flow rate of gas. The member 38 is held against rotation by a splined engagement 46 with parts 26c, 48 and engagement of part 26c with nose 27c so that rotation of the gas tank, which is limited by a lug 51 and a stop 52, adjusts the position of member 38. In Fig. 5, not shown, the lever part 26c is coupled to the fulcrum part which is in turn coupled to member 38. The lighter of Fig. 6, has a part 58 on a drive member 57 to engage above rocker lever 26e which bears on a fulcrum between nose 27e and a shoulder 25 on valve stem 23. The drive member 57 is moved downwardly to open cover 3 through lever 59. To adjust the flame, a valve member 38f, Fig. 8, is prevented from rotation by engagement with the square section valve stem 23f which is also engaged by rocker lever 26f having teeth 47f engaging nose 27f; so that rotation of the gas tank adjusts the position of member 38f as above.
