摘要： A pagewidth printer includes a pagewidth printhead. A feed mechanism feeds print media through the printhead so that the printhead can carry out a pagewidth printing operation on the print media. A printer controller controls operation of the printhead. The controller has a printed circuit board that includes a central processor. The central processor has a bus. A data input interface is connected to the bus so that the bus can receive compressed and encoded page data from a computer-based machine connected to the data input interface. Page data expansion and decoding circuitry is connected to the bus and configured to expand and decode the compressed and encoded page data. A printhead interface communicates print page data to the printhead. Processing circuitry controls operation of components of the printer controller.

A print media feed mechanism feeds print media along an ink path and operatively with respect to the inkjet printhead. An integrated circuit is mounted on the support structure to control operation of the printhead and the feed mechanism. The integrated circuit includes a data and control bus. Interface circuitry is connected to the data and control bus to permit external components to communicate with the data and control bus. Expansion circuitry is connected to the data and control bus to receive and to expand compressed image data. Processing circuitry is connected to the data and control bus to process the expanded image data.

The end of each line of pixels is determined on the basis of a parameter indicating page width.

摘要： A printer includes a printer having a pagewidth inkjet printhead. Feedback lines from the printhead are coupled to a processor that controls the printhead. Signals conveyed on the feedback lines indicate parameters such as the temperature of the printhead, available printhead actuator voltage, actuator heater resistivity and actuator heater width. A firing pulse circuit processes the temperature and voltage signals on the feedback lines to generate firing pulses that are applied to the printhead. The firing pulse circuit includes sample and hold circuits and analog to digital converters that convert the temperature and voltage parameters to digital signals that are applied to a memory table. The memory table is loaded with values by the processor. The processor determines the memory table values on the basis of a user brightness setting, an ink viscosity curve, actuator heater resistivity, the actuator heater width and the voltage and resistivity signals. Consequently a pagewidth inkjet printer is provided with firing pulses that are dynamically adjusted according to the printhead's operating conditions.

In particular, the firmware contains instructions to check that the page description data contains a predetermined signature. In a preferred embodiment the processor is also programmed to check that black and contone layer scale factors embedded in the page description data meet constraints dictated by page width and page height parameters. In the event that the constraints are not met then the processor clips the black and contone layers appropriately.

摘要： In contrast to making use of ink sensors to monitor ink reserve depletion during printing, an inkjet printer includes an arrangement to count ink droplet ejection. Each time that an ink droplet is ejected from a nozzle of the printer's printhead, a printer processor updates a memory device storing data indicating ink depletion. In one embodiment the memory device comprises a portion of an integrated circuit located on a removable ink cartridge mounted to the printer. The processor is preferably programmed to calculate ink reserve volume for each ink color on the basis of ink droplet ejection counts and to prevent printing if ink reserves are indicated to be insufficient to print a new page.

摘要： A problem that occurs with inkjet printers having a microelectromechanical thermal inkjet printhead is that the dot print size during the initial operation of the printer is inconsistent with the dot print size produced after the printer has reached an equilibrium temperature. In order to address this problem a method is described that involves applying a number of heating pulses to nozzles of the printhead before commencing a print job. The heating pulses are of sufficient duration to warm ink within the nozzles but are limited so that they do not cause ink ejection.
