    • An in-plane thermal buckle-beam microelectrical mechanical actuator is formed on a planar substrate of semiconductor material, for example. The actuator includes first and second anchors secured to the substrate and a floating center beam positioned between the first and second anchors and movable relative to the substrate. Symmetric first and second sets of elongated thermal half-beams are secured between opposite sides of the floating center beam and the respective first and second anchors. The half-beams are formed of semiconductor material, such as polysilicon. A current source directs electrical current through the thermal half beams via the anchors to impart thermal expansion of the thermal half-beams and hence linear motion of the floating center beam generally parallel to the substrate. In one implementation, the half-beams are configured at a bias angle to give the floating beam an affinity for in-plane motion. An actuator of the present invention with such bias angles can give the actuator an overall chevron configuration.

    • A measuring device for measuring the value represented by an indication on a graph, chart, map, or the like, having a calibration scale. The measuring device can accommodate any calibration scale over a wide range. The measuring device includes a first member, having a first reference indication on it, and a second member, having a second reference indication on it. The second member is movable with respect to the first member between a closed position, in which the two reference indications are adjacent each other, and an extended position, in which the two reference indications are separated. A first voltage signal, indicative of the separation of the first and second members, is applied to a ratiometric digital voltmeter which also receives as an input a second voltage signal determined by the setting of a manually adjustable control. The ratiometric digital voltmeter provides an output signal that is indicative of the ratio of its two input voltages, and this output is indicated on a digital display unit. In use, the two reference indications are placed at the two ends of the calibration scale indication of the graph, chart, map, or other such paper, to apply to the ratiometric digital voltmeter a first voltage signal indicative of that calibration scale indication, and the manually adjustable control is adjusted until the calibration value represented by that calibration scale indication is shown on the digital display unit. The two reference indications are then placed at the two ends of the indication to be measured, and the ratiometric voltmeter output, shown on the digital display unit, then represents that measured value.

    • Virtual controllers for visual displays are described. In one implementation, a camera captures an image of hands against a background. The image is segmented into hand areas and background areas. Various hand and finger gestures isolate parts of the background into independent areas, which are then assigned control parameters for manipulating the visual display. Multiple control parameters can be associated with attributes of multiple independent areas formed by two hands, for advanced control including simultaneous functions of clicking, selecting, executing, horizontal movement, vertical movement, scrolling, dragging, rotational movement, zooming, maximizing, minimizing, executing file functions, and executing menu choices.

    • A subject captured by a camera may be affected by environmental lighting provided by nearby light sources and the sun or moon, which may cause underexposure or overexposure of the image or aesthetically displeasing color tones. Image processing and camera adjustments may mitigate some imaging problems with limited effect and introduce undesirable side effects. A lighting array may be devised to expose the subject to various types of light (e.g., white light comprising full spectrum illumination and red, green, and blue lights comprising partial spectrum illumination) to resolve lighting problems in a more effective manner. Moreover, the lighting array may be responsively controlled to adjust the subject image with respect to one or more target spectra specifying desirable colors for the subject image. The lighting array may be iteratively controlled, e.g. by a gradient descent algorithm, for incrementally adjusting parameters with respect to proximate target spectra for the image.

    • Technologies for transient personal preference customization of environments, devices and systems based on user preference data. Such technologies enable users to maintain personal preference data on mobile or other devices, such as cell phones, personal data assistants (“PDA”), or the like, such that the data can be transferred to devices and systems capable of conforming parameters under their control to the preferences expressed in the data. For example, a frequent traveler may define preferences regarding room temperature, ambient lighting, music style, and the like and maintain these preferences in a mobile device such as a cell phone. Upon arrival at a hotel room, for example, the systems of the hotel may access the preference data and adjust the parameters of the room, and the devices and systems in the room, to conform to the user's preferences while the user is in the room or checked into the hotel. Such customization may be transient in that parameters may be returned to a default or other setting once a user is no longer present, or when another user is present.
