    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and precisely connect an optical waveguide and an optical fiber and to automatize connection by using the light receiving unit of a large diameter for monitoring output from an optical waveguide circuit. SOLUTION: In the connection method of the optical waveguide and the optical fiber, which are formed on a plane substrate, the light receiving unit 34 having the light-receiving area of more than a waveguide pattern width is provided at the first end part of the waveguide circuit 33. Laser beams are made incident on the optical fiber and an optical fiber block is brought near the optical waveguide circuit 33. The optical fiber block 32 is moved at random while the output of the light receiver 34 is monitored, and a position where the intensity of outgoing light becomes a maximum is searched. When cores are matched, output light is concentrated on a light receiving unit 34. Thus, output becomes low when the peak position of clad light is aligned compared with the case when the core is aligned. Thus, the case when light is made incident on the core can be discriminated from the case except for the above case by setting a threshold value in the output of light receiving interception.
