    • Circulating completion, workover and drilling fluids used in hydrocarbon recovery are filtered after monitoring for viscosity, which frequently causes plugging of filters. A viscometer generates a signal representative of viscosity in the fluid; the signal is used by a programmable controller to divert viscous fluid from the filter, or to take other action to prevent damage to the filter. The viscometer can be used in various positions in the system. Fluids deemed too viscous for the filter can be sent to a viscosity-reducing device, which may be a heating, shear-thinning, or cavitation device, to reduce its viscosity, enabling the fluid to pass through a filter without fouling. After filtering and a return to a lower temperature, the fluid may be treated if necessary to become viscous again for a useful purpose. A temperature monitor can be deployed on the fluid emerging or downstream from the cavitation or other device to assist in correlating temperatures to viscosities of various fluids. The cavitation device can also be used to increase the concentration of a dilute polymer-containing fluid to a usefully viscous value.

    • A medical device includes a control handle, an end effector, and a passive articulating joint connecting the end effector to the handle. The handle has a stapling actuator, an articulation joint actuator different from the stapling actuator, and a body through which the stapling and articulation joint actuators traverse. The end effector has an anvil, a stapler cartridge with staples, and an anvil-cartridge control device connected thereto and to the stapling actuator and staples when the stapling actuator is actuated. The stapling actuator passes through the articulating joint and flexes correspondingly to articulation of the articulating joint. The articulation joint actuator, when unactuated, holds the articulation joint and, thereby, the end effector, in a substantially fixed articulation position, and, when actuated, releases the articulation joint into its freely articulating state to permit free articulation of the end effector dependent upon external forces acting upon the end effector.

    • The present invention provides a composition comprising one or more than one isotactic, modified polypropylene (MPP) or polypropylene-α-olefin copolymer (MPP copolymer) and one or more than one polymer or resin, wherein said MPP or MPP copolymer is modified with one or more than one carboxyl or anhydride, preferably maleic acid or anhydride, or with one or more than one epoxy or hydroxyl group. Alternatively, the present invention provides a composition comprising an adduct which is the reaction product of one or more than one isotactic, modified polypropylene (MPP) or isotactic, modified polypropylene-α-olefin copolymer (MPP copolymer) with one or more than one carboxyl, anhydride, epoxy or hydroxyl functional reactant, polymer or resin. The composition may be used to make aqueous or solvent borne compositions for making primers, coatings, powder coatings, films, laminates, moldings and shaped-articles having good adhesion to thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO) or polyolefin, while partly or wholly avoiding use of environmentally harmful chlorinated polyolefin (CPO) additives. The isotactic MPP or MPP copolymer preferably has one or two terminal carboxyl, anhydride, epoxy or hydroxyl group. More preferably, the isotactic MPP or MPP copolymer has a low molecular weight and a melting point of from 70 to 145° C., preferably 80 to 105° C. for MPP copolymer and preferably 105 to 120° C. for an MPP homopolymer, and provides excellent penetration into TPO or polyolefin substrates.

    • A simple disposable pant-like garment includes a chassis and an absorbent assembly. The chassis, which can be extensible, includes a water-impermeable sheet folded laterally inward at both of its side edges to form opposing side flaps. Each side flap is attached to the interior surface of the chassis adjacent to its end edges. Each side flap has a longitudinally extending elastic gathering member attached adjacent to its proximal edge. The absorbent assembly is smaller in width and in length than the chassis. The side edges and end edges of the absorbent assembly can be disposed proximally relative to the respective side edges and end edges of the chassis. The absorbent assembly includes an absorbent core that can contain superabsorbent particles contained inside pockets. The absorbent assembly may be attached in a cruciform pattern to the chassis to allow portions of the chassis to extend laterally.
