    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To concretely give a way for realizing the improvement of fatigue properties by retained austenite. SOLUTION: The component for a machine structure has a componential composition comprising, by mass, 0.3 to 0.7% C, ≤0.80% Si, 1.0 to 3.0% Mn, ≤0.25% Al, 0.005 to 0.1% Ti, 0.05 to 0.6% Mo, 0.0003 to 0.006% B, ≤0.06% S, ≤0.020% P, ≤1.0% Cu and ≤3.5% Ni, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and in which the average size of old austenite grains in a hardened layer subjected to quenching is controlled to ≤10 μm, and also, the amount of retained austenite in the hardened layer is controlled to 7 to 22%.
