The outer surfaces (120, 140) of the first and second catheters are releasably joined for allowing the first and second distal tips (116, 136) to be at least partially longitudinally split from each other.

    • Catheter assembly (100) having at least one lumen (150 or 160) and joined to hub (106). While the lumen inner diameter(s) remain constant from distal end (144) of the catheter (140) to proximal end (142), the outer catheter diameter increases proximate the hub (106) providing increased resistance to kinking during connection and disconnection from medical apparatus. The increased proximal catheter diameter preferably is sufficiently large to plug the proximal end of an introducer sheath through which the catheter is inserted during patient placement, to plug the proximal sheath end and minimize blood aspiration therethrough, and later serves to fill the vascular insertion upon complete catheter insertion after removal of the introducer sheath again to minimize blood aspiration through the vascular incision. The catheter may have two lumens (150,160) or more, joined to respective extension tubes in hub (106). The two lumens may each have a respective inner diameter of between about 0.020 in and 0.025 in. The catheter body may have a lengthy distal portion vascularly implanted having an appropriate outer diameter for the vessel, and also a lengthy proximal portion with a larger diameter for resistance to kinking at a sharp bend between the vascularly implanted portion and the subcutaneously tunneled lengthy proximal portion.

    • A guidewire straightener assembly is disclosed. The assembly includes a guidewire tube including a tubular passage having a first diameter and a distal end including a collar having a second diameter, larger than the first diameter. The assembly also includes a guidewire straightener having a distal end, a proximal end having an exterior surface with a diameter sized to fit within the guidewire tube, and a longitudinal passageway sized to accept the guidewire, the passageway extending between the proximal end and the distal end. The proximal end of the guidewire straightener further includes at least one finger extending therefrom. The assembly further includes a guidewire having a third diameter, smaller than the first diameter, wherein the guidewire is disposed within the tubular passage and the longitudinal passageway. When the guidewire straightener is disposed within the guidewire tube in a first position in the tubular passage, the at least one finger is biased by the tubular passage into frictional engagement with the guidewire. When the guidewire straightener is disposed within the guidewire tube in a second position in the collar, the at least one finger is disposed away from frictional engagement with the guidewire.

    • A multilumen catheter assembly and methods for making and inserting the same are provided. The catheter assembly includes a unitary catheter and at least two distal end tubes which extend distally from the unitary catheter. The at least two lumens in the unitary catheter are in fluid communication with passageways through the distal end tubes. The catheter assembly may be made by extruding a unitary catheter tube having internal longitudinally extending lumens, then splitting the tube on its distal end portion to form distal end tubes. The tubes are then ground and polished to form a smooth surface on the exterior of the tubes. The catheter assembly may also be made by forming an outer layer on at least two longitudinally extending catheters while leaving two distally extending portions of the tubes outside the outer layer to form the distal end tubes. The multilumen catheter assembly may be inserted in a patient for acute and chronic catheterization and subcutaneously tunneled and inserted using a single insertion procedure while leaving the distal end tubes within the vessel capable of free movement and sealing the insertion site into an area to be catheterized.
