    • A wireless communication system comprising a virtual terminal (VT) formed from one or more independent devices (Device 1, Device 2, Device 3) and a terminal management entity (TME) for managing the virtual terminal. The devices may be independent physical devices (smartphones, tablet computers and so forth), virtual machines/modules of physical devices, or a combination of both. The virtual terminal and terminal management entity communicate via a base station and/or access point (BS/AP). The terminal management entity creates a service ID for a service to be provided to the virtual terminal, the service ID being shared by the one or more independent devices, each of which has its own device ID. The TME forms an association of the virtual terminal with the network through use of a multi-homing transport protocol such as SCTP, the association supporting the service by using the service ID. For service delivery, paging and handover purposes the devices of the virtual terminal are treated as a single entity by the TME.

    • A technique for reducing the probability of false alarms leading to responses of terminals (1) to control channel messages in a wireless communication system, false alarms being when a terminal detects and responds to a control channel message when no such message was sent. This is a particular problem in carrier aggregation in LTE when large numbers of carriers may be configured for a terminal. The terminal is expected to blindly search for a number of possible control channel messages from the base station (21, 22, ... 2n) for each carrier, and determine whether such a message has been correctly received by means of a Cyclic Redundancy Check. With a large number of candidates the probability of falsely detecting a message and responding (e.g. with an erroneous uplink transmission causing interference) can be significant. It is assumed that when there is active data transmission, more than one message (or data packet) is likely to be sent to the terminal (1) at any given moment. Thus by making the validity of a control channel message depend on additional conditions being satisfied, the probability of false alarm can be greatly reduced, without otherwise impacting system operation, for example if the terminal (1) only responds if two (or more) messages with particular characteristics are received in the same subframe.

    • In an LTE-based wireless communication system, each channel such as a control channel PDCCH is transmitted to the UE from one serving cell (the primary cell or Pcell). At the cell border the Pcell suffers from increased interference from neighbouring cells and typically a lower effective transmission rate is used to increase robustness to interference, for both data and control channel. Also, neighbouring cells are typically given different cell IDs, which can be used as a basis for distinguishing transmissions from different cells, even if radio frames are time-aligned. The invention modifies the control channel operation by arranging a common mapping of transmitted symbols to control channel resources in two different cells so that the same control channel message (P) or part of the message can be transmitted jointly from the two cells ((a),(b)), avoiding resources used in the cells for respective reference signals (R). This can be used to improve control channel reception at the cell border, without using more control channel resources. This would be beneficial in both normal system operation and also for Co-operative Multi-Point (CoMP) operation, e.g. using joint transmission techniques for data.

    • In LTE TDD with CA, a two bit sequence number or downlink assignment indicator (DAI) can be attached to downlink control information (DCI) messages relating to packets transmitted on some or all of successive carrier frequencies in a given subframe. The sequence number is incremented or decremented for each DCI transmitted depending on whether the total number of DCI message transmitted in a given subframe is even or odd. This allows detection of the loss of any three successive DCI (not including the last DCI). The specific improvement over the prior art is that the loss of the last DCI in the sequence can also be detected without adding any more bits. This allows a more accurate and reliable common understanding between the transmitter and receiver concerning the number of DC messages transmitted. This is useful, for example, if the format of transmission of ACK/NACK information relating to the DCI messages depends on the number of messages transmitted, since the most likely cases of failed detection of a DCI message can be detected and corrected.
