    • An automatic blood pressure monitor having a housing containing a first water and air tight chamber and a second air supply chamber, the chambers being separated by a common wall. Pneumatic equipment is mounted in the first chamber having a flow circuit for inflating and deflating a blood pressure cuff. A filtering unit is mounted in the common wall for retaining particulate material and moisture that is exchanged between the two chambers. The flow circuit has an air inlet port and an air exhaust port which are both located adjacent to the filter contained in the filtering unit whereby particulate material and moisture drawn into the flow circuit is retained upon the filter during inflation cycle and the particulate material and moisture retained on the filter is blown back into the air supply chamber during the deflation cycle. A drain is mounted in the floor of the air supply chamber through which particulate material and moisture collected in the chamber is discharged to the surrounding ambient. A restricted opening is provided in an outer wall of the air supply chamber which allows ambient air to enter the chamber through a tortuous path of travel.

    • The invention is in one embodiment an apparatus and a method for measuring the blood pressure of a vertebrate subject. The apparatus uses an inflatable chamber with a sensor to detect signals indicative of a blood pressure of the subject during an inflation interval of the inflatable chamber. If secondary motion or artifact signals are detected, the apparatus and method determine whether the secondary signals are below a predetermined value, and if so, complete the measurement. If the signals indicate that the measurement is not accurate, the system and method immediately institute a measurement of the blood pressure during a deflation interval, which can include a step deflation interval. In the event that the subject is identified as a neonate, the system and method immediately measure using the deflation interval procedure.

    • A security bar assembly has a plurality of bars that extend across an opening and have ends joined to drive chains. The bars may extend between two channels positioned on opposite faces of the opening, and may be slidable within the channels. The ends of the bars may be retained in the channels and the ends may have connections to chain links in opposing drive chains which are spaced apart a predetermined number of links to keep the bars a predetermined distance apart. A drive mechanism may be provided for moving the drive chains to slide the bars in the channels and a storage area adjacent the opening associated with the channels to retain the bars when they are not in place over the opening. The channels may each enclose a drive mechanism for independently moving the bar ends in each channel. In such embodiments, the drive mechanisms in the channels may be independently driven respectively by first and second motors. The first and second motors may be synchronized by a non-mechanical communication link. Transfer mechanisms are provided for moving the security bars between a stored position and a position in which the bars engage the bar drive chain.
