    • On occasion, during drilling operations employing oil base drilling muds, conditions occur that cause the surface of the solid materials in the mud to be water wet, changing the rheology of the drilling mud such that it is unusable and has to be discarded. In accordance with this invention, a novel method is provided to reverse this condition so that the water wet surfaces of the solid particles become oil wet again, restoring the drilling mud to substantially its original condition or level or to such a condition that it can continue to be used in drilling operations. This is accomplished by adding to the drilling mud containing water wet particles at least one of a specific and critical group of imidazolines.The imidazolines may be added to stable oil mud drilling fluids to decrease possible water wetting of the particle surfaces therein.

    • A drilling fluid having an oleaginous fluid that forms the continuous phase; a non-oleaginous fluid, which is the discontinuous phase; a primary emulsifier in sufficient concentration to stabilize the invert emulsion; and a rheology modifier, which serves to moderate the rheology change across a temperature range of 40 to 150° C. The rheology modifier may be a dimer poly-carboxylic C12 to C22 fatty acid, trimer poly-carboxylic C12 to C22 fatty acid, tetramer poly-carboxylic C12 to C22 fatty acid, mixtures of these acids, or a polyamide wherein the polyamide is the condensation reaction product of a C12-C22 fatty acid and a polyamine selected from the group consisting of diethylenetriamine, triethylenetetramine; and pentaethylenetetramine. The drilling fluid preferably includes a weighting agent or bridging agent which may be selected from galena, hematite, magnetite, iron oxides, illmenite, barite, siderite, celestite, dolomite, calcite as well as combinations and mixtures of these and similar compounds. Optionally organophillic clay, fluid loss agents, alkali reserve materials, and other conventional invert emulsion drilling fluid components may be added to the drilling fluid.

    • A method of using a water-base wellbore fluid in subterranean wells that penetrate through a subterranean formation containing a shale which swells in the presence of water. The well bore fluid includes, an aqueous based continuous phase, and a shale hydration inhibition agent. One illustrative shale hydration inhibition agent is preferably the reaction product of a hydrogenation reaction of the product of the reaction of an aromatic amine with an aldehyde, preferably formaldehyde. Alternatively the shale hydration inhibition agent may be the reaction product of a hydrogenation reaction of the product of the reaction of aniline and formaldehyde. In one illustrative embodiment, the shale hydration inhibition agent is selected from the class of compounds known as polycycloaliphatic amines. Further the shale hydration inhibition agent may be present in the form of a free-base or in the form of an acid salt of the disclosed amine compounds. The shale hydration inhibition agent is present in sufficient concentration to substantially reduce the swelling of shale drilling cuttings upon contact with the fluid.
