    • The present valve mechanism for an internal combustion engine makes it possible to reliably perform switching between the low-velocity operation mode and the high-velocity operation mode without delay. The valve mechanism includes: a first rocker arm which is supported by a rocker shaft in an oscillatory manner; a second rocker arm which is supported by the rocker shaft in an oscillatory manner; a cylinder provided for either said first rocker arm or said second rocker arm, said cylinder communicating with an oil passage; a first piston fitted in said cylinder in a slidable manner; an engaging protrusion provided in a protruding condition for the remaining one of said first rocker arm and said second rocker arm, said engaging protrusion being capable of engaging with said first piston; and a second piston which moves said first piston to an engaging position.

    • A variable valve train apparatus operable in a low-speed mode in which a low-speed rocker arm is rocked by a low-speed cam through a roller or a slipper to thereby open or close an intake valve, and in a high-speed mode in which a high-speed rocker arm is rocked by a high-speed cam through a roller or a slipper and a changeover mechanism part on the side of the low-speed rocker arm is pressed by a changeover mechanism part on the side of the high speed rocker arm together with which the low-speed rocker arm is rocked to open or close the intake valve. The axis of the changeover mechanism part is positioned at the middle of the width of the roller or slipper in the axial direction of the rocker shaft to prevent inclination of the high-speed rocker arm.

    • A valve operating apparatus, which transmits the rotation of the crankshaft of an automotive engine to the intake and exhaust valves to open and close the valves, can selectively vary the timing to open and close the valves and ther lifts of the valves. The valve operating apparatus includes a camshaft with low- and high-speed cams and low- and high-speed rocker arms, one of which is fixed to and the other rotatably supported on a rocker shaft. The valves can be opened and closed by the low-speed rocker arm. The other rocker arm and the rocker shaft can be engaged and disengaged by an engaging mechanism that is actuated by an actuating mechanism depending on the operating condition of the engine.
