    • 19,056. Anderson, W., and Crawford, D. Aug. 24. Skips.-Dumping-buckets, of the type in which hinged bottoms are held in the closed position by catch mechanism which is released by pulling a cord or chain, are provided with special means for effecting the discharge of the load. Figs. 1 and 3 show a bucket in which a spring bolt 3 is mounted in guides on a flange 7 of the bucket framing, and registers with a member 9 on the hinged door. A vertical member 11 on the bolt engages one arm of a bell-crank lever 10, which is connected by a rope 12 and adjustable connexion 29 to a second rope 26, passing round the underside of the bucket handle to a lever arm 30. To release the door, the lever 30 is raised by hauling on the rope 31 which passes over a pulley suitably arranged on the hoisting- apparatus. The portion of the locking-mechanism within the bucket is enclosed by a semicylindrical casing 13. A spring pin shown in Fig. 6 may be used to force the lever 30 up and release the hinged bottom if the spring bolt is not shot into the proper position for securing it. In the modified form of locking-mechanism shown in Fig. 4, the door is provided with a T-piece 14, the flanges of which are engaged by pivoted levers 16 ; the levers are forced apart against the action of a spring 24 by toggle-levers 23 connected to the rope 12. When the operating-rope is pulled, its first action is to raise the retaining-catch 17, against the action of spring 21, thus releasing the levers 16 and allowing them to be forced apart by the toggle-levers. When the bottom of the bucket is released, a peg 25 releases a second lever 19, which then engages a peg 20 and maintains the levers 16 in the open position until the bottom is replaced. In some cases, the positive connexion between the lever 30, Fig. 1, and the rope 31 is replaced by an arrangement in which a plain ring at the lower end of the rope is lowered over the lever and engages it when the rope is raised again. In such cases, the upper portion of the lever preferably is hinged as shown in Fig. 7, and is tilted by the weight of the ring until this can easily pass over it. A special hexagonal ring is shown in Fig. 10, comprising a series of plates with triangular lower edges 38. The lever 30 enters one of the angular spaces between two plates and is guided by the edges of the adjacent plates until it raises one of the levers 39 and is trapped in the space between two plates. The inclination of the lever when the door of the bucket is released allows it to slide off the ring, and thus detach itself automatically from the operating-mechanism.
