    • 251,741. Brown, J. W., and Pitman, G. March 24, 1925. Hoods.-In hoods for charabancs, omnibuses, and like vehicles of the kind in which removable side rails are supported head high from the body of the vehicle for hoop-stick fittings to rest and slide on, each side rail is supported by a forward and a rear pillar and each is combined with a rearwardly-foldable side-rails extension directed rearwardly of the rear pillar and adapted to receive the whole of the hoop-stick fittings. Each side rail e is supported on a forward pillar c and a rear pillar a and is removable therefrom and adapted to be folded together with a prop f and stowed away in a convenient part of the vehicle. The rear extension g of each rail may be carried by the rear pillar or may be separate therefrom. The loop sticks k are adapted to stick on the rails e and the front stick is connected by links w with a front bow t. A rear loop stick k may be pivoted to the rail extensions g. The hoop sticks k are adapted to be clamped to the rails e if desired.

    • 223,323. Brown, F. W. July 24, 1923. Spring wheels with springs between hub and flexible or non-rigid rim.-A frame for a wheel as described in Specification 162,822 consists of a central drum 13, adapted to form a housing for the brake drum steering pivot and provided with a disc 20 intermediate its ends apertured to fit the axle. The, ends of the drum are flanged and connected to two channel rim members 14 by tangent spokes 21. The sides of the wheel are closed by thin metal discs 23 with internal flanges fitting between the drum 13 and rings 14 and cross-pieces connect the rings 14 and carry the fulcra 6 for the crank levers 3 supporting the tyre segments 1. The link mechanism and springs for supporting the tyre are enclosed in the space between the drum and rim and consist of equalizing levers 8 connected at an intermediate point to the levers 3 by links 7 and at the ends to levers 12, 16 by the links 9, 9 respectively. The levers 16 are also connected pivotally to members 40 which are linked at their opposite ends respectively to the preceding lever 3 and by a link 9 to the lever 12 associated therewith. The levers 12 are disposed diagonally and are fulcrummed on the pins 14, being connected at their mid point either directly to the springs 11 or through levers 17 adustably connected to the springs by the sleeves 18 and clamp screws 45. The modification shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, consists of a lever 25 fulcrummed on one rim member 14 and, by a horizontal arm 26 , on the drum 13. The ends of the tyre segments 1 are connected to the levers 3 by link blobks pivoted at 26 between upstanding lugs on the segments and together by a U-shaped link 4 carried by one segment and passing over the connection 26, the end of the other segment being pivoted either at the sides of the link or to the transverse part thereof. In addition, the segments may be connected by links 33 coacting with stops 36 to limit the separation of the segments. Figs. 5 and 6 show pivots suitable for the various parts. The ends of the rubber tread blocks 2 may be made harder than the intermediate parts.
