    • 14,459. Gordon, J., Jackson, T., and Andrews, C. June 22. Marine governors; fluid relays.-A marine engine is under the control of an inertia governor b attached to the cross-head a, and a pendulum governor e of the type described in Specification No. 15,768, A.D. 1905, which is operated by the motion of the ship. The inertia governor b, Figs. 1 and 3, consists of a weight b pivoted to a bar b attached to the cross-head, and to a spring- controlled bar b which is in sliding contact with the bar b . At excessive speeds, the bar b moves a pivoted lever b against the resistance of an adjustable spring b , and opens a valve b which allows steam to pass through the pipe b and the valve casing c to an oscillating cylinder d which controls the throttle valve. The valve casing c, Fig. 4, contains a piston c which, on the admission of steam to the branch c , is moved up against the resistance of the spring c to connect the branches c , c . The pendulum governor, Fig. 2, consists of an adjustable pivoted tube g containing mercury which normally rests on the valve spindle e . Duplicate valves are provided for head and stern seas. The branch e is connected to the steam supply, and the right-hand branch to the branch c of the valve case c. The chamber e is connected to the condenser. When the vessel pitches, mercury flows to the other end of the tube g. The valve e is opened, and steam flows from the pipe e through the branches c , c of the valve casing c to the throttle-valve control cylinder d. The rod b carries a spring detent b which engages the support b when the engine races.
