    • A harvesting vehicle picks up the crop from the field, feeds it into a container, presses the crop into a compact stack and unloads the stack at a desired point of discharge. The press is reciprocated vertically with the container through use of a Ushaped lift swingable on the container and having arms that are operably coupled with the press. A normally locked endgate is controlled by the press such as to unlock the endgate and raise it to an open position for unloading in response to raising of the press. The container is tiltable for unloading purposes through use of an actuator common to the press such as to effect tilting after the endgate is opened and after the press is raised.

    • In the formation of a dense, compacted crop stack carried out by lifting a windrow off a field and blowing it into a moving, hollow body for periodic vertical compression by the upper section of the body, crop pickup and loading may be carried out continuously, even during the compression cycle of the machine, by virtue of accumulating structure carried on the roof of the upper section that collects and confines crops blown onto the roof during compression. The accumulated crop is dumped into the body therebelow from time to time at the rear of the body instead of the front thereof to prevent blockage of the incoming crop being loaded into the body and to encourage proper distribution of the crop. The accumulating structure on top of the roof is collapsible, expanding and contracting the accumulating chamber defined therewithin during lowering and raising of the roof, so that when the upper section is fully raised, no significant increase in height is imparted to the machine by the accumulating structure.

    • A swingable over-the-top tongue is provided for a windrower having a main frame positioned rearwardly of its crop cutting header. The forwardly extending tongue is upwardly arched for clearing the header above which it is disposed and is provided with a hitch at its forward end for attachment to a towing vehicle such as a tractor. The tongue is pivotally coupled to the frame for lateral swinging movement from a field-operating position to a roading position in which the tractor and the windrower are in essentially a straight-line relationship to one another presenting a minimal overall width. The tongue is further constructed in a manner to provide a fluid reservoir for hydraulically powered portions of the windrower.

    • A series of spring-loaded row units are individually mounted on the header of a harvester by a hinge assembly on the cutter bar and by upper supports extending between the units and a rear frame piece of the header. The hinges have interlocking hooks which rock relatively as the row units swing up and down over uneven terrain, the hooks being of such nature as to permit relative sliding movement as the distances between the units are varied. The supports are releasably hooked at the frame piece so that the entire distance adjustment as well as unit removal and remounting may take place quickly and easily by a single operator with but a single tool to release a pair of fasteners on each unit. Adjustment of the tilt of the units is equally as rapid and easy because of the use of a hook-slot arrangement in each of the top-rear supports.

In certain forms of the invention, the driven pulleys and an adjacent adjustable idler pulley which is provided for maintaining the proper tension on the belt, are essentially coplanar and have their axes of rotation angularly offset relative to an upright drive pulley, coupled with the power takeoff shaft, and over which the belt is trained. One form of the invention provides for the elimination of the coplanar idler pulley adjacent the driven pulleys and relies on the adjustability of one of a pair of upright mule guide pulleys for maintaining the belt taut.

    • A potato harvester has a vertically swingable, potato-unloading conveyor segment, extensible laterally therefrom, and provided with a pair of articulated sections adapted to not only discharge the potatoes gently into the bottom of a container, but to be gradually raised as the potatoes pile up and are heaped above the top of the container. A special, combination hip joint and power lift connection for the sectional conveyor segment causes it to rise automatically so as to prevent damage thereto when accidentally bumped by the potato-receiving container of a trailer, truck or the like. The effective width of the harvester may be reduced for storage and over-the-road travel by tucking or folding the outer section in, under and between the harvester and the inner section.
