    • 10,235. Goodwin, W. May 2. Hydrants.-A lift valve for a fire hydrant is normally held closed by a segmental nut engaging a screwthread on the valve spindle and adapted to be operated or released from a distance so as to allow the valve to be opened by the action of a spring or the pressure of the water. The segmental nut g is operated by the eccentric part i of a pin i or by a link connected to a lever h to which motion is transmitted from the hose or an operating-handle at a distance, by a chain or cord l or a Bowden or other flexible wire. The opening-spring f is arranged between the bridge-piece d and the handle e. To close the valve, the segmental nut g is returned and the spindle turned by band. In a modification, the screw is formed with inclined threads so as to press the nut out of engagement under the action of the spring f, when the lever h is released. To prevent tampering with or accidental opening of the valve, the nut may be locked by a pin n connected to the hose or valve casing.

    • 26,257. Goodwin, W. Dec. 16. Knobs.-Relates to fastenings for the doors of rooms, offices, railway compartments, &c, Bolting- mechanism within the knob on the inside of the room is so arranged that the initial turning of the knob brings a bolt into position for locking, and further turning of the knob actuates the bolt to complete the fastening operation. The knob comprises a part a, Fig. 2, rotatively secured to the escutcheon b by means of flanges n, m, and a second part d rotatable upon, the part a. The part a is fitted with a plug h to which the spindle c is secured by a set-screw k, this screw acting with the ends o, Fig. 3, of a cut-away part of the flange m as a stop for the knob. The interior of the cap d is fitted with a cam-piece r, shown separately in Fig. 4, to engage a sliding bolt s and force it into a recess t in the escutcheon. A spring u acting against a collar v returns the bolt from the recess. In operation, initial rotation of either part of the knob brings the bolt s into alinement with the recess t, the portion a being then held from further rotation by the stop k, o. The cap portion d being further rotated, the cam r forces the bolt into the recess t, and the door is fastened. The cap d may be fixed to the part a by a set-screw to dispense with the locking-mechanism. When the device is fitted to door knobs of the kind in which motion of the latch in either direction causes a corresponding angular movement of the knob, the initial movement of the knob may be effected by the spring of the latch mechanism. The cam has, preferably, two cam-surfaces r , r separated by abutments r , r so that the device may be set to operate either right or left handed ; a second recess t is then provided. A pointer w may be added to indicate whether the door is locked or not.
