    • This disclosure describes methods and systems for synchronizing broadcast and network content, such as web content. It also describes related technology for facilitating linking from broadcast content to related information and e-commerce on a network. One method detailed in this disclosure synchronizes broadcast content with dynamic network content at a network address. This method embeds an identifier in a broadcast, extracts the identifier embedded in broadcast content, and uses the identifier to identify corresponding network content. The method then posts the corresponding network content on a network device located at the network address (e.g., a web page at the URL of the broadcaster). The network device (e.g., web server) is responsive to requests sent to the network address to provide the network content over a network. Using this method, the broadcast content is synchronized with the corresponding network content. This approach enables the content at the broadcaster's fixed web site URL to change dynamically with the broadcast. This approach is transparent to the user, who simply visits the same URL to get more information about current programming or purchase a product currently advertised in current programming.

    • The invention relates to identification documents, and in particular to providing optically variable personalized data to identification documents. In one implementation, we provide an identification document comprising a document layer and a first indicium. The document layer comprises a material capable of being printed by a thermally transferable optically variable ink. The first indicium is printed on the document layer and comprises personalized data and printed to the document layer by a thermally transferred optically variable ink. The first indicium may be printed to the document layer by disposing a thermally transferable optically variable ink in a mass transfer panel of a printer ribbon adapted for use in a dye diffusion thermal transfer printer, and printing the first indicium as part of a mass transfer printing process. The thermally transferred optically variable ink can be selected and printed such that the first indicium has at least one of a luster, shine, sheen, pearlescent appearance, iridescent appearance, and mirror-like appearance. This technology enables the creation of a halftone "mirror image" over a color ghost image to achieve a layered and linked multiple personalization scheme of ID documents.

    • This disclosure describes an identification document(20) with optical recording media(22) , as well as related methods for making identification documents and materials used to make identification documents. The identification document includes first (24) and second(26) layers. The second layer(26) is cut to form wells (30) for receiving patches of the optical recording media (22). The first and second layers(24, 26) are joined, and the patches are placed into the wells. The first and second layers (24, 26) and patches form a composite structure that is used to make identification documents. In particular, in one embodiment, the patches are placed into the wells, which are filled with a curable liquid(54) . The composite laminate structure is then joined with a core layer(28). Other layers may be added, such as a laminate on the opposite side of the core from the composite laminate, and image receiving layers for printing variable information.

    • Portable consumer electronic devices featuring image- or audio-capture capabilities, such as cell phones, wristwatches, digital cameras, personal digital assistants, and MP3 players, are becoming increasingly prevalent. Watermark information embedded in the captured content can be used to trigger distribution of corresponding content (web pages, high fidelity audio, etc.) from on-line repositories. Thus for example, music "heard" by a user's cell phone microphone (10) can be processed and used to trigger the electronic delivery of a high fidelity version (20) of the same (or different) music to the portable device (22) or to the user's home computer (22). Likewise, an object "shown" to a cell phone camera (10) can initiate a link to a corresponding web page, launch a corresponding application program, or otherwise control the device. The watermark can be decoded from the content in the consumer device, or the content can be transferred to a remote device (14) for decoding.

    • A classification scheme assigns samples of the watermarked media to classes based on a classification criteria indicating a likely presence of a watermarked signal (100). Once classified (104), the scheme models a statistical distribution (106) of the samples in each class. It then assigns a figure of merit to the samples in each class. A watermark detector and reader use the figure of merit to give greater weight to samples that are more likely to contain a watermark signal. Alternatively, the statistical distributions of the classes may be used to derive an estimate of a watermark signal in a pre-filtering stage of a watermark decoder. The watermark decoder then extracts a message from the estimate of the watermark signal.
