    • 726,631. Fork lift trucks. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 21, 1953, No. 23093/53. Class 78 (3). A fork lift truck adapted for lifting crates having struts S extending obliquely between the top and bottom of the crate on each side, comprises a lifting carriage 18 mounted on a telescopic mast 14, 16, and a pair of spiked lifting arms 36 slidably mounted on rods 46 secured to the carriage, and urged inwardly by springs 48; the arrangement being such that when the arms are raised with their side surfaces in contact with the outer edges of a pair of struts S, the arms move apart until the spikes 54 engage under the top L of the crate whereafter further raising lifts the crate. The rods 46 are each mounted in a bracket 42 secured to a frame 28, 40 which is slidable on a frame 22, 24 mounted on the carriage and is adjustably secured thereto by pins 32 which pass through aligned holes 30 in the two frames. During lifting the lower end of the crate is supported by a plate 26. If desired movement of the arms along the rods 46 can be prevented by normally released catches 66 which can engage either of a pair of holes (not shown) in blocks 56 secured to the arms so retaining the arms at a predetermined spacing.

Class 78 (3) [Also in Group XXXII] In a motorized lift truck comprising a lifting head 10, a drive wheel 24 rotatably mounted at the forward end of the lifting head, drive means 23 for rotating the wheel for propelling the truck and laterally. spaced load wheels 21, 21 at the rear end of the truck coacting with the forward wheel 24 for supporting the truck, intermediate wheels 34, 34 having ground contacting rims are provided, mounting means for the intermediate wheels being positioned at laterally spaced points of the truck and holding the wheels normally spaced from the ground, one of the intermediate wheels contacting the ground when the truck tips relatively thereto and each of the intermediate wheels having the periphery of its ground contacting rim rounded so as to roll bodily with the truck against the ground on an axis including the ground contacting portions of the forward wheel 24 and one of the load wheels 21 upon tipping of the truck. In the arrangement shown in which a lifting platform 11 is equipped with a pair of spaced legs 19 and 20 each of which carries a pair of load wheels 21 and in which the platform is adapted for lifting movement in known manner, the forward end of the platform is formed with a vertical standard 30 carrying plates 32, 33 for supporting the wheels 34 on shafts 31. Thrust washers 35, 36 are provided at each side of each wheel 34.

    • 687,223. Locks. YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING CO. Nov. 14, 1951 [Dec. 18, 1950], No. 30752/50., Class 44 A cylinder rim night latch has an inside lever handle which actuates a coupling member which is selectively displaced from a position for coupling the handle to a latch operating cam to a position in which it locks the knob to the lock casing, the coupling member being movable to said position by key operated mechanism preferably incorporated in the handle. The lever handle 1, Figs. 1 and 2, is formed to recelve a cylinder plug 2 and is provided with a hollow spigot 6 enclosing a rotary sleeve 16 having a cam groove 15, and the spigot is slotted at 8 to form a seating for a slidable coupling member 9 with teeth 10, 11. The outer tooth 10 is adapted in the normal position to engage in a recess 12 in a rotatable lever-handle cam 13 which operates the spring latch bolt 14. The inner tooth 11 projects into the cam groove 15 in sleeve 16 so that on rotation of the latter, coupling member 9 moves along slot 8 to locked position in which the outer tooth 10 engages a recess 7a in the lock case and prevents operation or the handle 1. Rotation of the sleeve 16 is effected by an eccentric projection 5 on the plug 2 which extends into the sleeve and engages a radial projection 17 (Fig. 6) therein. The lever-handle cam 13 is mounted on the inner end of spigot 6 and held by a circlip 19, and is provided with a tongue 20 located between the ends of a spring 21 housed in an annular groove 22 in the casing. A pin 23 on cam 13 extends through a camming aperture 24 in the bolt lath 25 and into the path of a cover cam 26 operated by the bar 27 of the outside cylinder lock 28. In operation, coupling member 9 is normally in position to couple the inside handle with cam 13 so that the latch bolt can be withdrawn by the handle or by the outside lock 28 on insertion of the key. By key actuation of the handle lock 2 the handle can be locked, and at the same time the cam 13 freed so that actuation of the latch by the outside lock 28 is still possible.
