    • There is a zigzag sewing machine provided with a horizontal rotary loop taker device which is restrained with respect to the rotation direction, and holds therein a bobbin carrier horizontally attached, and is supplied with a lower threads from the left side to the left basic line marked with an axial line in front of the needle, and provided with a feed dog which is provided nearly to passage of the needle to move vertically and laterally. In such a sewing machine a cam portion is provided for supplying the lower thread to a lower thread contacting portion of the bobbin carrier or a lower thread contacting portion of a part connecting right and left teeth of the feed dog, whereby the amount of supplying the lower thread is adjusted properly with respect to the left basic line and the right basic line during zigzag stitching, and the slack amount of the lower thread is adjusted properly with respect to the left basic line and the right basic line during forming stitches. A cam portion is provided to the lower thread contacting portion of a needle plate for guiding the lower thread to change the passage of the lower thread, whereby the slack amount of the lower thread may be adjusted properly with respect to the left basic line and the right basic line during forming stitches, and the lower thread of the zigzag stitch is made pretty on a rear side of the sewn fabric.

    • Intercharacter data for use in an electronic sewing machine is prepared by the steps of constituting each intercharacter control data with a first stitch control data group for determining relative position between a fabric and a character, a second stitch control data group utilized to form the character, and a third stitch control data group for determining a spacing between adjacent two characters; drawing a top segment alpha and a bottom segment beta respectively passing through top and bottom portions of the characters in parallel with the fabric feeding direction; and drawing a front segment X and a rear segment Y respectively passing through mostly projecting portions of the character on the front and rear sides thereof with respect to the fabric feeding direction in perpendicularly to the segments alpha and beta . Then the needle position of a first stitch point effected by the first stitch control data group comes to a position near the segment X and the area (Sh') of a front blank portion bounded by a segment X0' passing through the first stitch point in parallel with the segment X, the contour of a character to be stitched next, and the segments alpha and beta is substantially the same between any two adjacent characters. Moreover, the area (St') of a rear blank portion bounded by a segment Y0' passing through a last stitch point provided by the third stitch control data group in parallel with the segment Y, the contour of a previously stitched character and the segments alpha and beta are also substantially the same between any two adjacent characters.
