    • 1332135 Injection-moulding shoe soles BRITISH BATA SHOE CO Ltd 23 Oct 1970 [31 Oct 1969] 50593/70 Heading B5A Injection-moulding apparatus for shoe soles comprises two mould sections movable in different directions, means to grip and remove sprue remaining on the moulded shoe sole after moulding during the movement of that mould section carrying the sole, the sprue removal means being moved between an operative position and an inoperative position out of the path of this mould section. As shown in Fig. 1, upper mould section 12 is vertically reciprocable by piston 26 of cylinder 28 and has a cooling plate 30. Lower mould section 14 and cooling plate 20 are mounted on a carriage 2, reciprocated horizontally by cylinder 6. When the mould sections are closed, a member 49 contacts microswitch 48 to start injection through nozzle 45 into cavity 16 to form a sole 22 with sprue 46 thereon. When full, the upper mould section 12 is raised sufficiently to disengage micro-switch 48 to stop injection. After a cooling dwell period, upper mould section 12 is raised and air passed through ducts 42 therein to retain the sole 92 in the lower mould section 14. Carriage 2 is then retracted, and sprue gripping mechanism swung into position behind the mould section by means of cam surface (86, Fig. 5, not shown) on carriage 2 and cam follower (80). Jaws (62, 64, Fig. 7, not shown) of the mechanism are closed to grip the sprue and remove it on continued movement of the carriage 2, which passes under wiping blade 94. Air is supplied through passage 32 in the lower mould section 14, raising pins 35, 37, 39 and the moulded sole 92 thereon. On return movement of carriage 2, the heel portion of sole 92 engages the wiping blade 94 and is removed thereby from lower mould section 14.

Each tool 2 is mounted in a frame 22 for rotation about a transverse axis under the control of pneumatic cylinder 21 and the frame 22 in turn is mounted for rotation about a longitudinal axis under the control of pneumatic cylinder 30. Cams (not shown) on the last carrier control the cylinders 21 and 30 so that each tool assumes its correct longitudinal (Fig. 4) and transverse positions with respect to the shoe bottom. The tool carriers are mounted on slides 14 which can slide on vertical rods 4 and which are connected via a rocker to counter balance cylinders 46. The cylinders 46 can be connected to air at high, medium or low pressures so that the tools can exert low pressures in the toe region 38, high pressure in the shank region 40 and medium pressure in the heel region 42. The pressure is again controlled by cams (not shown) on the last carrier. The heel of the last 62 (Fig. 9A) is correctly positioned heightwise by mounting the last 62 on a spring loaded last pin 94 and depressing the heel by piston rod 122 until the last is in its correct position. The last is held in this position by a ratchet 106 and pawl 108 which is released by a cam 112 at the end of the roughing cycle.

    • 905,846. Feeding moulding material to moulds. BRITISH BATA SHOE CO. Ltd. Nov. 25, 1958 [Jan. 17, 1958]. No. 37894/58. Class 87(2). In apparatus for slush moulding a boot a mould 3 is attached to a carrier 2 pivotally mounted on a trolley 1 for movement along a track 6 by means of conveyer chain 7, As the mould 3 is advanced in the direction of the arrow 34 as shoulder 35 on the trolley 1 closes a switch 36 on a filling gun carrier 26 to actuate a piston within a cylinder 33 to lower an elevator 27 carrying a filling gun 28 connected to a supply of liquid moulding material. When a switch 38 on the elevator 27 is closed by engagement with a flange 39 on the trolley 1 the downward movement of the elevator 27 is stopped and the filling gun 28 is actuated to fill the mould 3. When the level of liquid in the mould 3 rises sufficiently a control float 40 is lifted to discontinue the supply to the gun 28 and the piston in the cylinder 33 is actuated to raise the elevator 27 and remove the gun from the mould. Specification 841,754 is referred to.
