    • A method of controlling a motor operating a pumping apparatus of a fluid-pumping application. The pumping apparatus (120) includes a pump (140) having an inlet (125) to receive a fluid and an outlet (130) to exhaust the fluid, and the motor (145) coupled to the pump to operate the pump. The method includes the acts of controlling the motor to operate the pump and monitoring the operation of the pump. The monitoring act includes monitoring a power of the motor, and determining whether the monitored power indicates an undesired flow of fluid through the pump. The method further includes the act of controlling the motor to cease operation of the pump when the determination indicates an undesired flow of fluid through the pump and zero or more other conditions exist.

    • An electric machine having a stator assembly that includes a stator core and a coil supported by the stator core and a rotor assembly that includes a shaft and a rotor supported by the shaft that is in magnetic interaction with the stator core. The electric machine may include a single sensor configured to detect magnetic polarities of the rotor as the rotor rotates relative to the sensor and to generate a signal representing the detected magnetic polarities of the rotor. The signal and an inverted version of the signal are utilized to control current through the coil. The sensor may be encapsulated on a circuit board to positively position the sensor relative to the circuit board. The circuit board may be mounted to a bearing housing of the electric machine. The sensor may be received in a pocket of a bearing housing of the electric machine so the sensor is positively positioned relative to the rotor. The rotor may be connected to the shaft with an encapsulation material. The rotor may be formed as a single cylinder of ferrite. A tapered air gap may be formed between a portion of the stator core and a corresponding portion of the rotor. The electric machine may be a C-frame electric motor with the I-bar portion formed of grain-oriented electric steel.

    • A switched reluctance motor includes a rotor (14) mounted for rotation about an axis (18), and having a plurality of rotor poles (22, 26, 30, 34) and a stator (38) surrounding the rotor (14) and including first, second and third stator phases. The motor also includes energizing means for sequentially energizing the stator phases with an energy source to cause rotation of the rotor (14), based on rotor position information, the energizing means causing one phase to be energized and then deenergized to a near zero current level prior to a point where the rotor pole breaks away from the stator pole.     • A switched reluctance motor includes a rotor (14) mounted for rotation about a rotor shaft axis (18) and a stator (38) surrounding the rotor (14) and having at least three electrically independent stator phases. The circuit also includes run means (122) connected to the comparing means (114) and the switch operating means (130) for switching on a selected one of the switches (98) to rotate the rotor (14).
