    • 674,479. Conveyers. CASSE, M. June 13,1950. [July 5, 1949] No. 14701/50. Class 78 (i). [Also in Groups VII and VIII] A machine for felting hat bodies has at least two felting mills or felting layers to operate successively on the hat bodies and conveyer means to allow any number of successive passes to be made, the position of the bodies relative to the mill rollers being altered by the conveyer between each mill or layer. Means for automatic cozing are also provided. In the first embodiment, Fig. 1, two mills, F 1 , F 2 , have a conveyer M between them comprising spaced discs keyed on shafts driven from the spindle of a roller 7c of the mill F2 the discs of the middle three shafts being longer at the ends of the shafts than at the centre or viceversa so that the hat bodies are displaced transversely relative to the rollers of the mills while on the conveyer. In operation, hat bodies B1 are placed on a conveyer 16 which comprises a number of parallel belts driven by gearing 19a, 19b, 19c, from a roller 7a of the mill F 1 and are then fed to the first mill F 1 and finally deposited by it on the conveyer M which alters their position relative to the mill rollers before they enter the second mill F 2 from which a shoot 33 deposits them on a conveyer 34. The conveyer 34, comprising a number of parallel belts, is driven by a pulley 39 preferably at a different speed from-the belts 16 so that where the two conveyers are in contact as between the rollers 17, 18 automatic cozing takes place. A device 46 causes the bodies to fall back on to the conveyer 16 to repeat passes through the mills until felting is completed. In the modified embodiment, Fig. 7, a single felting mill, having two felting layers is provided, the conveyer M 1 between the two layers comprising an upper part ml and a lower part m2 driven at different speeds from the rollers of the mill. The upper part m 1 comprises parallel belts 50 passing over equal sized pulleys 51 and over pulleys 56 keyed to a shaft 57, which are of different size at the ends of the shafts as in the case of the discs in the first embodiment so as to displace the bodies transversely while on the conveyer. The lower part m 2 also comprising parallel belts is in contact with the upper part m 1 between c and d and as the blanks pass between these points back to the lower felting layer cozing takes place owing to the difference in the speed of the belts of the parts m 1 , m 2 . The feed to the mill is identical to that of the first embodiment.
